Immigrating to New Zealand.

i googled both words and still could not figure out which was right.

It's easy.

Emi = out of.
Immi = into

I am emigrating from South Africa.
I am immigrating into Antarctica.

Personally I doubt I could ever raise my kids in New Zealand or in Australia.

Anyway, couple of thoughts on the issue at hand. (Friend went to nz about a year ago):

Housing prices are nightmare. Practically forced to rent. Somewhere down the line one qualifies for an ultra low mortgage though. Think 5-7 years.

Cars are cheap.

Minimum wage is respectable so pretty much any job provides a semi respectable cashflow. Not enough for an entire family though.

Weather (depending on island) is painful & heating is a must.

Impossible to blend in with SA accent.

SA people seem to have a pretty rubbish reputation over there.

Your friend needs to get ride of the SA house & car thing. Moving there stretches ppl to the limit financially. (Friend sold a 2.5mil house here and still found it to be an uphill battle).

Entertainment is on the expensive side (Watching a movie, beer etc)

Computer prices are respectable.

Academically everyone seems to be uber chilled & not worry much about anything career wise.

we just come back from talking to our daughter now about the move and she wants to still go this year if she can. we think she is a wee bit hasty but will help he with it anyway. i have given her the information from you guys and gals and we are looking on the web. she knows a few people over there and is going to contact them for advice too and some of you have pm'd me with connections and contacts which i have forwarded on to her.

all this is very much appreciated as we can all learn from it.

as far as i remember she also didn't need a visa to visit NZ.

You are issued with a three month visitors visa upon entry to the country.

You cannot work.

You can however look for work and apply for a work permit once you have a job offer.

she was there for a month and nothing was mentioned about a visa, or is that what would be stamped in her passport? (sorry i don't know these things).

i also believe they only give foreigners jobs that the locals don't wont, is this true?

The job you can get is what a company gives you. There seems to be little issues. My brother in law's wife works as a teller. Now if that is a job locals do not want then I really do not know!

thats what i was thinking too. if she goes over there and sees a sign that is looking for a shelf packer then surely she can apply?

That depends on her age. If she is still fairly young (& without dependents) then improvising on the fly is a reasonable strategy.

Not true. There is certainly no universal preference for local ppl. Nothing AA/EE style. Individual employers might have personal preferences. That friend of mine I was talking about got the first job he interviewed for & there were 7 NZ nationals trying to get the job too.

Employers seem to put a hell of a lot of emphasize on people skill & apparently the average NZ dude is way ahead of the avg SA person in that game.

she is 28 with no dependents and over here she was studying law as she works for an attorney that deals with the RAF but as the law is different there she does not want to delve any deeper into it but wants to see what they are looking for over there and study that.

she is talking about wanting to leave in about 6 to 7 months time but..........
