Immigrating to the UK

The cost of living in the UK seems excessive, is it worth emigrating if you'll have to take the drop in SOL and Europe isn't as easily accessible as it use to be?
Not really. It depends of you are here earning pounds, or on holiday spending rands. (Then everthing looks expensive)

Yes, everything has gone up here but it's still very much affordable.

What type of work do you do?

Depending on your demand in the UK industry, you may have a small drop in CoL on arrival, a boost is still a possibility, especially in IT/dev, and once you’ve got UK experience, you will likely find your new normal to be significantly better.

Depends where you live really, and what you value in life. My rent in a nice village in Scotland is under 500 a month for a decent 2 bed flat. All other bills and food come to around 700 a month and I live very comfortably. If you're not living in expensive hotspots, it can even be cheaper than SA.

Saw this earlier and I'm confused how this scam operates...Do they fake the visa? How is the person even allowed into the country if that's the case

Definitely doesn't make sense, it also says she was promised a job as a carer but there was no job when she arrived. The care industry has one of the highest rates of vacancies of all, at least 165,000 open positions as of 2022 and getting worse.

Between 2020/21 and 2021/22, the vacancy rate rose sharply from 7.0 per cent to 10.7 per cent and the number of vacancies rose from 110,000 to 165,000. The gap between the vacancy rate in social care and that in the wider economy has grown to 4.3 per cent

Got bored half way through reading that but seems to be a dodgy sponsor that should lose their license. Poor buggers, spent all their cash in an agent and are now jobless in a more expensive place to live. I know it’s cold to say it but I hope they leave and don’t get treated as special. All of us kakked off on some level to get here.

Admiral is trying to almost double my car insurance at renewal (end of September) altho I had zero claims.

Apart from moneysupermarket, does anyone have some insurers / other websites to share where I can get comparison quotes?

Contact paul at specialist4.co.uk

He was recommended to me by expats on an expat group and I found the price reasonable.

Compare the Market, I use them every year.

I always use https://www.gocompare.com/car-insurance/

Well worth shopping around for cheaper deals. I move almost every year.

Octopus is the best of the bunch. I am with them and very happy.

If your mom can manage the financial planning required, then switch to a whole amount direct debit. Then they just take what you use each month, none of this estimated annual usage malarkey and paying extra in summer to subsidise winter.

You can just change it to a lower amount, can't you? Anyway, £210 is about what I pay as well. This house I'm in has horrible insulation.

Just change it in the app, you control the DD, just do your own sums and work it from there.

My DD is currently £90 a month.
