Immigrating to the UK

So got a job offer to work in Slough. But will most likely reside in Reading from what I have read. How is that place for a family? Anyone here staying close by?

Personally I wouldn't stay in reading but there are lots of quieter villages and towns nearby.
It's commuter belt and M4 corridor so brace yourself for the housing cost....

Cool thanks. We see whats around. Just need a place that has good connections and good day cares and schools

Can recommend Wokingham as nearby to both and lovely to live.
Reading is about 7 minutes by train, to get into london from there is about 28 minutes.
You also can go direct to waterloo from wokingham, but its slower, around an hour and a bit.
Other areas around here are also very nice.

Reading has nice and not so nice places. It is more city and less village.

UK credit cards are great...
Yeah, rolling a balance is not a good idea.
However, there are so many interest free options that if you do need to, you just grab one of those.

There are plenty of lenders who will accept SA address history, just shop around.

I am still 3 weeks away from having 3 years UK address history. I have a mortgage and my credit card limit is over 50k.

I've had an aqua card, capital one, some other credit builder I can't remember, and more lately tesco and my last card was an HSBC elite with a lunatic limit.

The only places I got any kind of credit was klarna and O2 for my account.
My credit history is very good from South Africa, I earn well enough here, on pre-approvals everything says highly likely etc, but then it is denied.

I even get recommendations from Lloyds to get a credit card to improve my credit score, but they then reject it.
Only thing I dont have is the voters registration, it is done but fighting with TransUnion to update it.

No idea what I did wrong, I have a UK passport, over a year staying here, permanent employment etc

You probably have a "thin file" - because of insufficient verified ID. Things will improve once you're shown as on the voter's roll.
Get a loqbox account as well!
SA credit history is irrelevant.

I'm just getting on by without worrying about the credit score anymore. Pay your bills on time and try to save a little more here and there so you have the cash ready if you ever get a surprise cost.

Oh, and if the score is something you are keeping in mind, avoid hard searches. They can wipe out a months of score building.

I’ve been considering paying loqbox from ZA (using a friends UK address + the fact I have a UK passport).

Would this be sufficient to build up credit from this end? (Also have Monzo and Wise accounts).

Yes, I used Loqbox as it adds some info to your credit profile. Wont be a massive increase though.

Guys using fake addresses is fraudulent #justsaying

Don't bring those kind of SA tendencies with you.

Guys, remember it's only fraudulent if they find out.

Interestingly, I saw that HSBC can pull your credit history from other countries, but unfortunately SA is not supported.
