Immigrating to the UK

has anyone successfully first found a job/offer before moving over?
Yes. I have a passport so it was a bit easier. I hunted for jobs on LinkedIn, Indeed etc. for a good few months. Spoke to recruiters, had many interviews, but eventually had to convince the companies that I was moving to the UK regardless, without them needing to assist me in any way. A lot of employers are put off by the fact that you are still moving to the UK, they don't like the possibility of you getting cold feet last second or having potential delays to get over which will impact start date etc. so in my case it was better to reassure them that you are moving by yourself and just need a job once you arrive.

Question for those in the UK, what are the best banking options that have similar benefits/rewards to FNB and Discovery in SA? I've been in the UK for a few months with a Club Lloyd's account, but now that I've settled, I want to move to a bank where I can get loyalty rewards similar to eBucks and Discovery Miles, lounge access, flight discounts etc.
Do these types of rewards even exist here?
Best rewards program I have is a free muffin & coffee with the O2 app every Friday, whoopty doo.

UK & EU lounge access I use my FNB Global account card.

The closest you are going to get to any SA like rewards is with once off signing on bonuses for moving bank accounts.

LOL nothing even fkn close mate.
I'm now with barclays premier - they try... but it's not very good.
Figured as much. That's one thing to add to the list of things I miss from SA (alongside R5 delivery fees on Uber Eats)

Shop around, it's not industry wide, there are insurance companies that don't charge these admin fees, even more if you use their online portal to make the changes.
Would be grateful if you can shoot a few examples please.

Just checked mine, no admin fees*
Can add cars etc via the app BUT it is hell getting through to a human for anything.

When we initially arrived people advised us to try marshmallow because they would accept our ZA no claim bonus, but using their online app couldn’t even get cover.
Should probably spend a bit of time on this now after being here a while.

Aviva accepted my SA NCD by the way
This is good to know, they were initially just the underwriter for my first car, then when I “upgraded” went direct and didn’t even bother checking again.

Hmm I probably did as well - but my move was to a lower risk location so I got a refund anyway

Yeah, for me it wasn’t a change in my premium or cover. It was literally just updating my address on their website, and they billed me for it. Cheeky sods.

To add to the short term insurance rant:

Bicycle get stolen - they remove the bike from my policy after payout, but premium stays the same.
I go out and buy the exact same bike, then they charge me an admin fee to add the bike, PLUS a premium increase for added bike wtf.

What form of proof did they require?
What your proof needs to show in order to be valid:
We need your latest renewal invitation, cancellation letter or proof of NCD from your previous insurer. Before sending please check the document:
· is in English
· is on official company headed paper
· is in the main driver’s name
· shows the vehicle details
· states the number of years NCD
· shows the date of cancellation of your last policy (within 2 years)
Don’t forget that you can only use your NCD on one vehicle at a time.
Have my letter from Outsurance so let’s see what happens. Not getting my hopes up though.

I would presume the premium increase was due to the algorithm deciding your bike was an increased risk on your profile with one already being stolen.

Nope.
You paid for a year of insurance on the old bike. removing it from your policy has no impact because you claimed, so no refund.
Add a new bike = new item on your policy so extra premium for the rest of the year

It's a ****ing racket.

A good starting place is https://www.comparethemarket.com/

Because there are so many providers here it pays to shop around and always compare them to get the best deals. I normally move mobile/insurance/broadband every few years - you save a fortune.

BTW, can one typically get -1% or whatever in the UK, like in SA (for good credit, playing providers off each other, etc.)?
