Immigrating to the UK

@Sinbad did you just offer me a free lift from the airport to Newcastle

The Metro runs from the airport into Newcastle.

Anyone successfully opened a bank account from SA?
I have a NI number and an address of a friend, but monzo declined me without giving a reason.
Going to try a few others, but my new company needs to load my details as part of their onboarding process...

I opened an fnb channel islands current account, and it was usable for salary deposits.

You need a valid BRP as the bare minimum (for ID) and a delivery address to open a Monzo account. (Im certain other local forms of ID such as a UK drivers licence or a UK passport will also suffice, if you have this)

Most other banks, will require a proof of address in addition. Something like a utility account or similar.

Have a passport and an address, they dont give a reason for declining unfortunately

My furniture shipment arrived this week, been here 2 months today.

Feels good to have my old stuff, the house is starting to feel like a home.

I also ended up selling my rust bucket gumtree bike and got a demo Trek MTB on ebay for less than half or retail price.

Pro-tip dont buy a "nice" bike. A bit of SA followed me to the UK, my Trek got stolen in a month of ownership

(I used a high tech gold standard Kryptonite lock, and this wasn't even in London. The lock was removed with an angle grinder at a very busy train station).

Luckily it was insured, but its a hassle dealing with a claim and back to walking, seems we cant have nice things anywhere.

Yeah, the rate of bike theft in the UK is ridiculous: 77465 in England and Wales in 2021/22. Totally put me off getting one.

Block I live in has a bike shed at the end of the parking lot - brick, with double wooden doors. Was in my kitchen making lunch one day, and I see three youths in tracksuits (standard yob uniform) pull up on 2 bicycles. One slowly rides into the parking lot, obviously scouting. The biggest, most inbred-looking one walks over to the doors and frantically starts pulling at the handle. He somehow manages to rip them open, and goes into the shed. I start shouting at them out the window to piss off, they get a fright and leg it. I contacted the police straight after, and they logged the case. Unsurprisingly, this occurred months ago, and nothing has happened. The building maintenance team came out the same day to fix the doors and reinforce them.

Saw the other day that a maintenance guy was also reinforcing the doors to the shed a couple of blocks down, so more than likely those little ***** got in there, too.

At my wife’s work, a couple of yobs walked through the security booms around 2 weeks ago and stole a bike from the bike rack. Also securely locked.

JAJIRREFOK!
Very nervous last night... took delivery of a new shiny bicycle. It came in a marrafaking HUGE box which I left on the kerb for the recycling droids early this morning.

And my insurer won't insure it, so I hadn't organised any cover (it's sorted now...)

Last time I left a box on the kerb like this the house got broken into the same day (granted in ZA)...

Of course, leave it to my American friends to point out the obvious solution:

This is my current conundrum. Feels very much like someone having a second car and only driving the fancy car over weekends and the shitbox during the week.

I don’t really see the point of buying another nice bike if it will get stolen again, plus by the time weekend arrives I’m already gatvol of cycling to work every day.
