Immigrating to the UK

What are finding wrong with Gumtree? As long as you're only searching the area you're willing to travel in and transact face to face you shouldn't have any problems.

I've done a fair bit of buying and selling on AVF as well. I haven't used eBay to sell stuff for a long time.
Gumtree - Lack of buyer / seller rep system. Plus as you mention, you are limited to areas willing to meet.

Ebay is not bad for buying but the fees are putting me off from selling.

Carbonite was effortless buying and selling stuff cross country. I miss churning electronics & gadgets.

Ebay has special offers for selling quite often, £1 final value fee is the most common I get, AVF is about the only forum with all sorts of gadget classifieds, but be prepared to be expected to send first for the first few items you sell if the prospective buyer has plenty of feedback.

I'm a bit risk averse to dealing privately by mail order so don't have much experience of it, I signed up for Shpock but haven't used it, it's another buying/selling app.

eBay also no longer uses PayPal, so there’s an additional seller fee charged on every sale.

Apart from all of SA's obvious ****, this is actually a big pull for me in a general cultural sense, rather than just hobbies from what it seems you're saying.
Much as I'm born here, I'm not African, I have British/Euro descent and a native English speaker, and this minority is dwindling more day by day.
I can't vibe with how Africanized the cultures become. Not complaining lol, to be expected in Africa. But I want to go pubs with English speakers, watch the F1 at Silverstone, watch TV with English hosts and adverts, go to concerts with Western acts, consult with native English speakers in everyday life.
Thanks for your post, very interesting. Family friends moved to Leeds and very happy. I really hope I can make it this year.

In a way, I'm the opposite. I'm of British/European descent, native English speaker, but I'll always have a bit of Africa in me. It will always be my home, as long as I live, wherever I live.

It's something my wife doesn't really understand (she isn't South African nor is she British). She says I'm English, because I speak English and have a lot in common with English culture.

But the English have no idea what a braai is, or what lekker means, or the pleasure of going to "the bush". They have no idea what it means to kuier. To just talk crap with a drink in your hand while the fire is burning. It makes no sense to them.

And that's a part of me, and I miss it, and I think I always will.

My colleagues here know exactly what a braai is, have been to the bush and know how to kuier around a braai. Summer BBQ is big here, just us abnormal folk who do it all year round, rain or snow. :)

eBay also no longer uses PayPal, so there’s an additional seller fee charged on every sale.

You can still use PayPal if you want (at least the last time I used it), the new eBay payment fee is less than the old eBay + PayPal fees, isn't it?

I have my ticket booked for the 3rd Feb 2023.
Starting at my new job on the 6th Feb.
Just need to find a room to rent in Aylesbury and then I am sorted. Want to rent a room until I have a credit record then will get my own place.

I used airbnb to find a spot after I landed. Gives you some time to actually go and look around at places, and the rental market is tough - LOTS of demand.

You can use PayPal to pay but that’s it. EBay’s payment processing fees are just about identical to what PayPal charged, same sht different day.

We used booking.com. Getting a rental was really tough for us which meant a full 6 weeks in those places at a rate per week that equals our current monthly rent. Loads of demand and doing the background checks are far easier if you have history so the agents need to work harder for you. Took a while but eventually found a good agent who would give us the time of day.
Remembering back now it was probably one of the most frustrating processes.
I would also want to physically view places. We saw a place online that looked perfect but the second I stepped through the door was put off by the way it smelled.

Does anyone know the process to follow to request the letter mentioned here?

The non-resident tax status confirmation letter attests that the taxpayer has ceased to be a tax resident of South Africa and indicates the effective date on which his / her South African tax residency ceased.

The letter is being issued in addition to the Emigration Tax Compliance (TCS) PIN, which is a confirmation to the taxpayer that he / she has successfully completed the ‘exit tax’ procedure via SARS. The TCS PIN is only valid for one year from the date of issue.

I got lucky and managed to buy a place within 6 months of landing, so didn't actually have to rent, just did 6 months of airbnbing.

This all confuses the hell out of me.

In my last tax return I ticked the box for "became non resident during the tax year.
My return was accepted - no docs requested or anything.
I just checked my RAV01...

I found this:

So I did it on the ITR12. But no request for supporting documents...

Pretty much. The got pissy that PayPal was taking a cut when sellers’ money was transferred to them, so they decided to manage the transfers themselves, and obviously take the fee directly (something like 12.8% of the value of the item sold).

You can base most categories on eBay at 20%, as in you’ll get 80% of any sale back. It’s steep but then again you can’t sell just about any old vintage junk for hideous amounts on anywhere but eBay.

FB marketplace is pretty good though, barring the endless is it still…

Oh Lord, don’t even get me started. I tried selling on Marketplace ONCE…
