Immigrating to the UK

How would I go about finding an agent to assist with finding a rental in commuting range of Bank?

Do you locals that side recommend a month long AirBnB to find my feet and a place to rent?

I have chosen to rent a room, paying the deposit before I leave SA and the 3 months up front rent when I arrive at the property. Renting for a year so that I get the credit record I need to rent my own flat

You need to have a chat with @Sinbad, he bought a mansion house after about 6 months.
I know 6 months is enough, but frankly by renting for 1-2 years I can save a lot of money since the rent includes all utilities and bills. Just going to wait for my gf to finish her degree then when she comes over I will rent a flat or house... or maybe even buy.

Rent > mortgage cost. >>>>>.
Although that being said, maybe less so now that rates have risen - but landlords aren't gonna take that knock, tenants are.

Scotland in the summer is amazingly beautiful. Take a long weekend trip up north to Edinburgh by train and make use of local touring services. Definitely worth it.
The purple Heather everywhere, a Edinburgh is great, though go to Urquhart and such see the famous Loch

In my last tax return I ticked the box for "became non resident during the tax year.

I'm not good a tax stuff so read this with that in mind, but there were articles about this and ticking the box on your tax return only tells them that you say you are a non-resident and does not mean "become a non tax resident". I believe at some point they disabled that tick box because of the confusion.

There is a separate process to follow to cease tax residency.

But if this works for you I stand corrected :)

The guidance I read said that ticking the box would initiate a request for supporting documentation for cessation of tax residency
It didn't... But then I updated my RAV1 with a UK phone number (it already had my UK address in it) and that seems to have triggered the request for docs.

What bank is everyone using in the UK?
Initially your choices will be very limited.

If they will take your lease as proof of address then you are golden. If not, the only bank I found willing to open an account was Lloyd's. They will post you a security code and then you use that to open the account.

Imho there's not much to distinguish all the banks. All their offerings are pretty vanilla.

Something else to build credit history is Loqbox

Definitely worth doing.

Also with Lloyd's. Used an Argos card that had £60 credit, lol, and a Post Office cc, limit was £100 and an O2 contract for credit building.

Haha yeah my first card had a £200 limit. Aqua if I remember right...
I found it worthwhile to install the credit ratings agency apps on my phone and do their hoop jumping recommendations.

Credit karma, Experian and Clearscore.

Oh and get on the voters roll asap

If you haven’t got a data card yet, Smarty is useful to get you up and running. Purely month to month and you can order them to be delivered to your destination before you arrive. Data doesn’t “disappear” here so you won’t need huge amounts of it. Just check coverage in your area.

There is a WHSmith at Gatwick that opens at 6am (I land at 5:45am), I can get a GiffGaff sim card from there.

Are there any such data packages available on e-sim?
