Immigrating to the UK

That's awful. That's also a really long flight :(

One of the reasons our animals took a bit longer to come over was that we insisted on a direct flight, no stopovers. (I know that's not an option for Melbourne)

We are going to do the same. Direct flight only.

Looks like spouse visa takes six months to process. Is this the time frame for those of you who went that route?

Woop, got my big order placed and confirmed from the saffer butcher for my mates birthday bbq in August. Best part of the order is the 12kg boerie!

Thought you were joking…six months? damn
I might just pay for the priority route which is an extra £800. But yea six months… don’t know how you work with that when the sponsor needs a job in the uk.

My wife's took 4 but that was 2.5 years ago

Trying to work out timelines. Because the visa requirements is that my wife needs a job in the UK to start within 3 months of her arrival; she’d have to go to UK first then only could I apply for a job.
Fortunately because she earns enough here to meet the financial requirements there is no need to work in the UK for 6 months first.

But even then; she’d need a job first before I even apply and that means she’d have to go over first.

Do we start putting up the house for sale before the visa arrives? I guess so as there’s no reason we wouldn’t get it as we meet all the requirements.

If your wife is going on a scarce skills visa and you're joining as a spouse, you apply sy the same time as her. When we initially came over, my visa arrived at just about the same time as my wife's.

She has a British passport.

Just make sure the priority service is available in South Africa. Wasn’t when we applied but that was Covid related iirc.
Waited the full 24 weeks for ours.
Sidenote: I take you are enjoying your stay given that you are speeding things up?

Ah right so it’s to show she can support you as her dependant, even though you’ll be working. I had that, too.

Yeah exactly that. Even though my company is based in London - my wife has to prove financial means to sponsor me.

So I think she’d have to go over first. Because we also need a suitable accommodation even before we apply for visa.

Yeah they say it’s been lifted. The reason I want to do the priority thing is due to not having to be apart from my family for 6 months.

And yeah we are fully committed to the move now. It’s been really good having the family about and around our son. Saying goodbye on Thursday is going to be tough.

Get a relative to write a letter stating that you're welcome to stay with them on your arrival and that they have enough space for you - that takes care of the accommodation side.
Work side - see if she can work remotely for the UK org for a couple of months? She just needs a signed contract really to count for the sponsorship/finance.

+1 for the letter. Had my BIL “inviting” us to stay with him.

Good shout. We have asked my wife’s parents. They have a 4 bed house and agreed to write a letter for us.
