Immigrating to the UK

To add to what's already mentioned.

Yes, you can renew prior to expiry. It costs extra, I can't recall how much unfortunately. You don't need a police affidavit or anything like that. I filled out the form at DOHA and got a new passport a few weeks later. Simple as that.

Depending on circumstances, consider to get a maxi passport.
Awesome thanks!

I just went to the first cell shop I saw when I landed at Heathrow last month and bought a sim. If you're flying to Heathrow, it's at T5 right opposite the coffee shop at the exit. Can't miss it.
If she is coming with Virgin Atlantic they park at T3. But the vending machine is also opposite the coffee shop.

Tks, it's BA so they land at T5 - perfect for what @Priapus suggests.

Must not get confused, must no get confused :X3::X3::X3::X3:

Oh, then another tip. Once you get off the plane, do not be an idiot like me and skip the shuttle to border control and think “ugh it’s a short walk”

No. No it’s not. More like 15 to 20 min walk. When you see signs to get on a shuttle, get on them. Unless you like walking of course.

Walking is not my idea of fun especially after sitting on a plane for hours. Thanks it's good to know about these things, will look out for the shuttle.

Affidavit if I remember right. But this was a looong time ago

/edit found this:

Passport fees:

First-time application for a passport: R400

Application for a new passport (with old passport): R400

Application for a new passport (if passport is lost): R800

So probably not an issue then.
R800 it is then. Fine so be it. I’ll get that done next year. Thanks dude.

It's more than that, cause you're applying from a consulate they are gonna hit you with R1200 per passport, not sure if the double early renewal fees are applicable here as well.

Oh I know. We're looking at about £70 for each passport without the lost passport fee. But mines not lost just early so it shouldn't apply.

Add in the cost of a trip to London and it works out over £100 each. Crazy.

Not counting the £38 for a rush copy of my UK birth certificate because banana republic

Madness!
R800 in comparison to have it done here and less hassle.

Gods I forgot to fill in some form and now they've nailed me with a bunch of extra tax in my first month here, aaaah!

As one of the early first steps in our journey I am considering selling one of the cars. It’s a performance sedan and would sell for over 250k.

We don’t use it much and it’s paid off. So thinking that money would be good to put in UK accounts for now.

We are looking to leave SA in July next year. So it is a little early to sell the car - but seems a bit wasteful keeping it just because of that.

I have not started it in two weeks as we use the other car more.

Yeah if you don't need it then I would suggest the following:

1. Sell it
2. Put the money into your Shyft account (in the Rands wallet)
3. Wait for the exchange rate to improve (I notice it seems to strengthen around the 23/24th of every month.
4. Convert to £ and leave in your Shyft £ wallet until you get to this side and can open up a local account and transfer the money in.

Who else has to send money back to SA and noticed that come the 24/25th the Rand has strengthened?
I have to send back about R10k each month and once again I miss out on R24/£. I am irked!

Pretty much exactly what I plan on doing.

We already have access to a full UK account that we use and save money in each month. Wife never closed it when she moved to SA 7 years ago.

How difficult is it sending money to SA from a UK account? (She's with Halifax)

As easy as an EFT in SA.

I send money from my Lloyds to my Starling account (which is instant), and then I send Rands to my Capitec account (this takes about 24 hours). Only reason I use Starling to send to SA is because they are cheaper than Lloyds.
