Immigrating to the UK

^ Think that's also the case ja, still going through the process is a huge strain so any lump sum is going to throw you. I remember when I came over, no house or car to sell, after the dogs and airfare, only had 1400 pounds to live on and on day one, a taxi ride cost 200  The panic was real, lol
Our taxi was £330. 4 people and 9 large bags.
Driver met us at the PCR testing at Heathrow, watched our bags etc which was great but we paid for all of that time in his parking fee + tip.
Same distance and car in JHB cost R800.

I’m a tight fisted ****er so it was all budgeted for in savings, as are our all of our fees till we nationalise. Increases in those fees just come out of additional saving.

Once someone sells a house in SA - how long does it take to get money from the sale? (After settling the bank - and provided you sell for more than owed) ?

Fokkit next time reach out, I'm sure I could help/make a plan

Thanks bud. Short story is, car rental place would not take my card for the deposit - as it was booked on my wife’s name - her UK card expired. We hoped Apple Pay would work - it didn’t.

So.. we were stranded at the airport for 3hrs with the little one trying to make a plan - and find a ride, with a car seat.

Was not fun.

This time we’ve asked someone in advance to assist - as we don’t want to rent from the airport again.

This depends on when the transfer happens - my last transaction I had the money from the lawyers 24 hours after the transfer was registered at the deeds office.

Busy time that so my memory is sketchy but think it was between 2 - 4 weeks.

I'm an hour from Heathrow and Gatwick for future reference. Even if I just bring you to my place it's a much shorter trip to Hastings from here

Does the transfer take long (I can’t recall when I bought) ?

Just thinking, the extra money from the sale will really help - but not if it’s tied up for months after the sale.

Will definitely keep that in mind next time, thanks!

Lol **** I just googled, Heathrow is closer to Hastings than I am in terms of driving time

If everything is in place it should take about 3 - 4 weeks from the day the you+buyer sign the otp. If they have issues getting a loan it's going to be longer. Most of it is lawyering, the actual transfer is a couple of days once they have the paperwork ready. My last one was a cash buyer, it probably took about 14 days start to finish, the biggest delay was the chop of an electrician I used for the COC.

Current plan is to leave is to apply for Spouse in April and leave by end of July. So I am thinking house should go on market in Jan.

Enjoy, it’s a hell of a ride. The dust hasn’t even settled for me yet. I mean that in a positive way. Time of my life.

Just have a contingency plan in case the house doesn't sell in time, touch wood

I'd even consider selling now, putting stuff in storage and renting a small place or squatting with friends/family

We’re not counting on the money from the house. But it would help a lot of getting setup in the UK. Selling the S4 and the GTI getting us close to £18k So that’s a good start.

Have to do a few “touch ups” before it goes on market.

Fukkit all downhill from here for a few months

Yes!

What did you do? Take a taxi from Heathrow to Yorkshire?

Manchester to Harrogate mate :/

Don't think anyone on a normal salary in UK can absorb that kind of cost without feeling it...
Especially if you don't have savings.
I'll most likely open an interest free credit card account to do my wife's payments and then pay it off over a year or so.

I'd be lost without my 2 main CC's ..... I don't use them much but I've built up nice balances for emergencies and such

I spend more than that per 2 week trip, especially when you start slamming down £7.50 beers. I can't imagine how it must feel like starting a new life on £1400, that takes some serious guts, kudos!

It was rough but a spare room at a friends and determination gets wonders done :D

The process was longer than usual as the buyer was out of the country and something needed to be signed.

So, for us, the offer to purchase signed to cash in the bank was 3 months.
