Immigrating to the UK

Oo that's a good one. Mine only matches 7% for a total of 14%. It does mean I'm saving quite a lot in ZAR terms though.

Yea, the caveat being salaries are probably a bit lower than what I could get elsewhere, but this makes it almost worth it lol

That's the whole play with public servant jobs. The girlfriend works for government and earns a average salary but gets about 25% in pension contributions and huge amounts of leave.

I was a bit depressed about how much I was saving, a while ago, and pulled up my pension statements and converted it to ZAR. I think I'm going to retire very comfortably in some low cost of living country.

Anyone keen to get £125 for 10min work and another £125 for the next person you refer?

I already have a co-op bank acc (went though the whole process) and can refer the 1st person, then that person can refer the next etc. Drop me a PM if you would be keen.

Edit: Similarly you can also do the same for your SO to get more £125 referrals

Home Office rows back on plans to hike family visa salary threshold to £38,700

The Home Office has rowed back on plans to increase the salary threshold for family members of migrants in the UK following a backlash.

Home Secretary James Cleverly told the Commons earlier this month that the threshold for a family visa would rise from £18,600 to £38,700 by "next spring" in a bid to reduce the number of people coming to the UK.

But documents released by the Home Office suggest that the threshold will now only increase to an initially lower figure of £29,000, while no timeline is set out for when the higher threshold of £38,700 will be introduced.

New £38,700 visa rule will be introduced in early 2025, says Rishi Sunak

Plans requiring people to earn £38,700 a year before bringing family to the UK will be introduced in early 2025, Rishi Sunak has said.

The rise from the current £18,600 level was announced earlier this month and had been scheduled for the spring.
However, the government has rowed back and now says the increase will come in two stages.

Next spring, the threshold will rise to £29,000, with the further increase not applying until the following year.
Speaking in Lincoln, Mr Sunak defended the timetable, saying: "The principle here is absolutely right that if people are bringing dependants into this country as part of their family, they must be able to support them.

"We're doing exactly as we said we would. We're just doing it in two stages. So it will go up in a few months time and then it will go up again the full amount in early 2025."

He added: "The levels of migration are far too high. They've got to come down."

The next general election has to be held by January 2025, meaning Labour will face close questioning about its position on the proposed rules.

Their logic is nonsense though. Cost of living varies wildly across the UK, so it would have to be region specific.

This whole means testing for citizens with their immediate family is nonsense.

It’s a deterrent, so they don’t really need it to make sense. It’s ****, yes, but they’ve given themselves no option by leaving it so late. It just makes it harder for people who had no intention of ever gaming the system.

Their next focus should be on student visas being exploited: over 500k were handed out last year, and that excludes the almost 150k dependants they brought over (who have no restrictions on work by the way). A lot of visas are granted through dodgy educational institutions, and thanks to COVID 70-100% of lectures for some degrees are online, so there’s no longer a requirement to be physically present on a campus.

Australia is already going to tighten the rules by dropping the maximum age from 50 to 35 and limiting dependants. They’re also making changes to the graduate visa scheme after they published new figures showing that almost half of graduates were employed as waiters and bar staff 2 years after getting their degrees. The entire point of the visa is to work in your field of study after your graduated.

The UK, for some reason, is just so soft when it comes it immigration. Unless you’re doing it the right way, of course.
