Not to be funny but why do you care about losing SA citizenship? I would gladly give mine up for UK.

Because you never know what the future holds. Rather have it and never need it than wanting to return and having to try get it back.

I’d never give up mine.

Courts also made it illegal so it’s a moot point anyway.

I'm curious how many of you folks will be voting in the South African elections this year.

Delighted to have learnt that we can now register to vote from abroad online: https://online.elections.org.za/voterportal/voter/registration/abroad

Last time I voted it was still when they had the ruddy form that needed to be filled in. Still remember travelling to the consulate in Copenhagen for that one.

Alas, I never bothered with the previous one. First (and so far only) time in my life I didn't vote in a South African election.

If I am not in SA by the times elections rolls on by; I’ll be sure to vote from abroad.

I actually agree with this sentiment. I usually make it a point not to vote in elections for countries I'm not residing in (but I might make an exception this November).

I would if there was a voting station closer, but I am not taking a day off to go to London to make my X

No family or friends in South Africa that are still your problem? No sense of duty to a country whose citizenship you retain, perhaps? Or that you spent a better part of your life in and have experienced the issues of?

Apologies for the preachiness, but it's a bit difficult for me to relate.

London's a three-hour drive for us, and we do it regularly enough for my husband's work that it's virtually second nature these days. Figure we'll make a weekend of it, drive through the Friday afternoon, stay at a hotel or B&B, vote, walk around, find one or two nice places to eat at, then bugger off back home on the Sunday.

It doesn't have to be a chore :) Plus, it's only once every 5 years. Hardly end of the world!

But many kudos to the fellow voters <3

Went a LOT quicker than expected - we only applied in October last year.

If it's any help, the election will be held in London on a weekend. So, depending on where you are, relatively easy to take a train in and out the same day.

Not preachy at all don't worry.

The hell I and family went through the last decade odd in SA, nah I have nothing left for it. Threw away SA citizenship the minute I got my passport.

..... I started a new life as a citizen of a new country, the old is no more.
 
Re: foreign voting, we’ve been at the polling station for every election we could, but sadly, our efforts have made even less of a difference than if we’d voted locally. Even the highest opposition turnout hasn’t made a dent in almost 30 years of ANC rule. The only way they’ll ever leave is if they destroy themselves from within - there are simply too many brainwashed masses still keep them in power with every election.

Alternatively, as much as I hate two party systems, it’s still significantly better than 50 parties trying to vie for the scraps after the behemoth opposition has taken most of the pie (again). While SA has the current system in place, the ANC will NEVER be unseated.

Having just been notified that my British citizenship application has been successful, and not having requested to retain my Saffa citizenship, the final link has now been broken, anyway.

Feel the same way but what has caught me off guard is that being a foreigner now, I feel more South African than ever before. Not in a longing to return way, I feel very much at home, but I’m very much a foreigner.

Dare I say it the coalition party system is even worse than the ANC rule?

I used to live in JHB and all these coalitions do is fight for power, and nothing gets done. (last time I checked there was 8 mayors in the last 5 years).
