Immigrating to the UK

If it wasn't for Brexit, tax would not have been scrapped on sanitary products (tampon tax)

So basically the EU and by extension remainers are just sexists

Which could be done as an EU member, that’s why the rate varies between 4% in Spain and 20something % in Hungary. Sanitary products just need to be designated as health related products (or words to that effect).

Virtually everything trumpeted as a Brexit benefit could likely have been implemented if the government of the day (the Tories) had wanted to.

Even BLUE passports…

All Member States are to be treated equally and should therefore be given the same possibilities to apply reduced rates, which should however remain an exception to the standard rate. Such equal treatment can be achieved by enabling all Member States to apply to the eligible goods and services, within defined limits, a maximum of two reduced rates of a minimum of 5 %, a reduced rate lower than the minimum of 5 % and an exemption with the right to deduct input VAT.

Getting some decent snow here by me today, and just yesterday I was bragging about the weather to a friend that lives in Sweden...that'll teach me. Still loving it though, will go for a walk soon!

I did it after I moved

No cons
Pros: no more SA tax liability. And it's necessary to get an RA out the country.
Re: De-registering as an SA tax resident - what form did you fill out again (couldn't find it via search)?
All done via E-filing, correct?
Can you please share a quick rundown of whats needed, how long it takes etc?

What happens to SA pensions & RA's?
Can I keep SA bank accounts active, I still have some active debit orders and funds flowing between UK & SA.

I got my tax consultant to compete and fill in and submit.

I had to give them (from what I recall):

* UK certificate of tax or whatever it's called, basically proof you are registered for tax in UK.
* Proof I was living in UK, I used tenancy agreement for this.
* Motivation letter why you want to change tax status. This is like "Busy/bought a house, working full-time in UK, child in school, and most important that you residency in UK I permanent and you are not planning to return to SA.
* Think it took 4 months?!?

I still have my StdBank account open with no limitations.

You should be able to cash out your pensions immediately, tax will be taken.

As for RAs you have to do tax (old financial) emigration. You be subject to 3 tear waiting period on cashing out RAs. I think it will also be paid into a blocked account which is an account you cant transact on, it can only send money to a foreign bank account. And for this you need an agent to handle it for you. This process took 6 months from start to finish.

PS: Been a few years since I did this, and things have changed.

There's no financial emigration any more. AFAIK you can get your RA out after 3 years of non tax residency. I'll be doing it in March.

As to how I did it, it was a box I checked on my tax return the year I left.
They then sent me a letter asking for proof, via efiling. I sent a UK tax cert, proof of address and wrote that I'd sold up everything in SA and had no reason to return. They accepted that and sent me a certificate of non residence.

My fnb account stayed the same.

Same here. I was rejected the first time for no reason I can figure out.
I submitted the same information and with a detailed letter. They wanted some weird stuff like gym contracts of all things, but overall it was fairly easy.
It did make my final tax submission a nightmare, it is still pending even though its for the year before I applied for tax residency change

You can back date the 3 years if you can prove you were living out of the country.

It called tax emigration right? I was lucky as I financially emigrated and submitted my application in February 2021 just before the laws changed
