Immigrating to the UK

Congratulations! That sounds like a good deal anyway and three years go by in a flash.

Thanks!
The issue comes in, if after three years I decide to switch to a family visa, the clock resets for ILR and I’d need to do another 5 years before I qualify.

I did ask the company what happens after three years and they said they would renew the visa for me for another two years. So I’d actually need to commit 5 years. Or find another sponsor after three years.

Congrats!

Thanks! It’s been a year since I first started this journey and our DMs I think. Man time flies!

I’m watching the weather asl well…38deg this week where we stay in SA. Jesus wept

This heat has been unbearable. 35c the other day. I am looking forward to a cooler climate. Then again I’ll be in Dubai as summer starts there lol

Congrats! That’s pretty standard I think, same with mine but 2 instead of 3 years.

Thanks! Yeah it’s pretty standard I think. I also don’t want to change jobs for awhile. I have changed a bit over the last year. Currently at Luno who lied to me during interviews. Joined them because they said they were open to me moving to their UK branch when the time came. Found out the other week that was a lie and they’ve stopped all internal moves.

Didn’t get it in writing. Lesson learnt and now I have it in writing with new company.

You should really have made an appointment first via https://services.dha.gov.za
You have to be there really early these days to be allowed in as one of the first people.
After 9, they mostly just accept those with appointments scheduled.
I tried to register 2 months ago on the site but the OTP isn't working. I've tried about 100 times already but never get the OTP. Emails and calls to the DHA go unanswered so my only option is to join the queue. So looking forward to this. Not!

Officially accepted an offer today with previous employer.

Since there are delays with the Home Office and issuing of CoS - they’re putting me on a SA contract first as I need to be in Dubai in April for 4 weeks first. However it’s in writing in the offer they made that as soon as the UK issues the CoS they will apply for the visa and switch me to a UK contract.

Been hearing about the delays. Some waiting weeks to months for CoS. They’ve requested a few and said will let me know as soon as it comes through.

Sounds like they’re offering to pay for the visa too as long as I commit to them for three years. Unsure how I feel about that. Saves about R100k now but means I can’t easily move to another company. But not an issue if I decide I want to leave I’ll just pay for the visa.
Congrats. 3 years goes pretty danm quickly.

Otp does not work to overseas number or ported number.

Remind me tomorrow, I have a link at work for resetting your cellphone number. Use a friend in Za to get the pin?

They hit me just after I registered :( I've got a link to edit your profile and number, but the geniuses have setup the OTP on that so I need to have a working number to change it to a SA number.

Flying back to SA this weekend, was wondering what cheap gifts I can take to my friends, and the only idea I came up with is to buy them some Terry's Chocolate Orange. That stuff is amazing

Already in SA.

Almost on the same flight as you. Flying back next week. Loaded up with mars and yorkies chocolates and tea.

Not looking forward to the 30+ weather.

First task is to get up kak early and go stand in line at DHA for a passport
Use the Babs service on home affairs site to book a slot. It actually works!!

Also protects you in redundancy time. Your job would be saved or else they would need to pay you out for remainder of contract.

I was told this by some locals when my company was doing redundancies and I had not got an 'at risk' letter like everyone in my department. I still had 3.5 years of a work permit contract left. I didn't know at time , but would have taken the money if given the choice. In any case, stayed and have a nice British passport today.

Well at the moment there is a delay with issuing CoS from the Home office. So chances are we will go the spouse route if there is no CoS by the end of the month.

Hopefully in 5 years time I’ll have a British passport too. That’s the plan.

I met a "useless" expat yesterday.

In a nutshell, he was telling me how he came here with his wife and adult daughter, and how wonderful universal credit is as both his wife and adult daughter don't work but claim benefits.

The kicker, he isn't even British. Came here just before Brexit on a French passport.

Glad it’s harder for foreigners to abuse the system now.

That's disgusting.
Glad they changing the rules and forcing people to find employment rather than stay on UC.

This is the problem with the utopian socialist systems... people forget that generally humans are lazy, but that there are truly lazy people who will suck off the system and abuse it.

I have a friend who came to the UK with his wife and two kids. She has a BP. He found a job within 2 weeks of being here, she went on UC until their youngest was able to go to school since child care was outside their budget. Now that their youngest is at school she has gotten a job. She was on UC for 9 months.
