My employer is so clueless about actually running a decent IT operation that they don't want to pay overtime or standby. I got told my guys must plan their workloads so they can get everything done in office hours.

It's a house. I am buying in a town on the edge of the peak district, so a bit more rural and closer to nature, not to mention quiet versus the city.

Like the idiot I am, read Peak District, thought Lake District. None the less beautiful. One of the great benefits here is that you can live in a small town and still have access to everything.

Ah lake district is amazing but too impractical for me. Also outside of my budget by some significant margin!

I think NHS consultants get that salary very easily and pretty sure some IT & finance people.

I'm in tech. Higher salaries are mostly in London. I happen to work for a fortune 500 so get the benefit of US tech salaries affecting our pay scales a bit.
Being tied to a company via a visa sucks. But I'm not sure what exactly the solution is either, people will definitely abuse it if they weren't.
I'm just gonna have to suck it up for a few years until I hopefully get ILR.

That house I was telling you guys about…
Landlord has been super accommodating. Even offered 50% rent reduction on first month.
We have agreed on all the terms; paid a holding deposit and will pay the first couple of months rent, next week!
Tenancy is 6 months in my wife’s name as she has right to rent. We will decide if we continue after 6 months. Then I’ll be added to the tenancy then.
So it’s official.. we have a home in the UK to actually go to. One that will take the pets too.
Such a relief as now if my visa doesn’t come through in time; at least the family have someone to go ahead of me.

Regarding credit profiles...
1) Another easy option to get some "loan" action from Loqbox. Basically you take out a "loan" for an amount you choose like £400, but you actually never receive the funds. You then pay it off over 12 months and Loqbox updates your credit profiles just like you took out a loan and you are paying it off. At the end of the term, you either have them pay you back the entire amount minus £35 fee, or you open a bank account through Loqbox and the £35 is not taken from you.
Used it for 2 years when I first arrived and I feel it helped boost my profile somewhat.
2) When you arrive, grab a PAYG sim for you and wife from the airport or local supermarket (no RICA required here), I choose EE. Then after 2 months or so, the service provider will phone offering you a contract which you then take as they will then also update your credit profiles monthly.

I have found the EE network performance to be the best.
I however chose to go the Lyca (which is on the EE network) monthly option.
Another way to boost your profile, is after about 6 months of getting a salary start to buy things on Klarna. Its a 3 month payment option with 0% interest.
Now here is a naughty secret... when filling out credit applications that you know you can afford with a place like Curry's, the application will ask where you have lived for the last 3 years. Just tell it you've lived at your current address for 3 years. It works and the system doesn't check. Then you pay off the item and build your credit record quickly.
