Immigrating to the UK

They’re not as bad as they were with Corbyn and the Momentum extreme-left nonsense (which made so many Labour die-hards swing the other way in 2019), but they simply will not be able to deliver anything they’ve promised without ruining the country even further than what the Tories already have. But they’re going to try. And then the Tories will be back, rinse, repeat.

Two party systems are just so ****.

I don't get applying to retain South African citizenship if there is a large chance UK citizenship is not going to be granted. But whatever, maybe I've been advised incorrectly, I don't know. Can't go back in time now.

Also recently acquired citizenship through 4L, you only need retention before the ceremony, as the ceremony is when you officially become a citizen.

As mentioned above, it takes about 4-6 weeks for the retention and I waited almost 3 months for my ceremony invite.
I did actually arrange my retention well before I got confirmation that my application was successful, mainly because I saw that some people had to reschedule there ceremonies due to not having retention and I didn’t want to be waiting for that after everything else was approved.

Indeed. It’s why the claims that the NHS is broke because of the Tories is laughable when they’ve spent more on it year on year.

Spent on the NHS or spent with their pals? How much was the last estimate of covid tenders given to Tory family members, friends and party donors?

No... though since I'm getting direct correspondence about the 4L process from an immigration expert, I'd say more so than most of the people commenting earlier on the matter.
And I see you've read tin4444 personal experience wrt this too.

So you’re not an expert. Show us then where anyone else claimed to be?

From what I've read, the increases are all less than inflation so they have been sneakily de-funding it in real terms. This comes at a time where medical inflation globally has been significantly higher than standard inflation.

General election most likely to be on 4 July. Labour government by 5 July. Then we’re proper ****ed.
Been trying to get into British politics, but I still dont know who is worse between the 2.

Yeah me too. Doing more reading today on it. I’m just interested in general politics in places where I stay or going to stay. I don’t follow US politics or any other politics. Just SA and now UK.

All I know is everyone hates the tories.

Cool cool I’ll go with Octopus and do it once I’m there. I’ll ask the agent to ask landlord if we can get a smart meter installed if there isn’t a lot of cost to it.
No cost on the smart meter install and landlords are OK with it. Really no reason for them to object.
Just had ours installed. Technician arrives and I immediately recognise him. Same guy that done our last install for EDF(Zimbabwean chap) but has moved to Octopus. Oddly enough he still uses EDF for his own house which I thought was funny. Did say he is moving over to Octopus due to not only how good they are but also how bad service is at EDF. Why? Cause their call centre is in ZA. This is not anti-ZA but rather anti offshore call centres. Worst idea ever.
Anyway, install done. Let’s see how we can take advantage of better rates now.

Thanks for the info. I’ll definitely ask for this to be done. At the moment we are unsure if we will stay on the after the 6 months is up. But I don’t really fancy moving again this year.

People at my work hate them so much lol, but then they also say labour is just as useless so who knows. I just try to avoid any politic talk especially at work

I avoid it with anyone I know personally.

I was thinking about this last night. I have never heard anyone talk politics in our office at all.

You won’t even have settled in 6 months. Life goes into hyperdrive once your feet hit the ground.

For sure. And it’s just under two months now until we should be there. Still awhile to go.

But our current lease is until October I think. So I’m not too keen to move again after that to another (cheaper) place. And take our son out of daycare again etc. I think if our budget works we will stay longer. Then again I want to buy a house within 18 months of being there. Not sure how realistic that is - but getting a cheaper rental will help.

18 months is perfectly achievable. You'll just need a decent deposit.
