There are a lot of South Africans that struggle to speak even basic English…
Yeah I’ve met some Afrikaans people who struggle with English. They’d definitely not pass the test.

But also unlikely that they would have a grandfather born in Leicester that would give them a pathway to entry into the UK.
What level is needed for a SWV?
It didn't mean you suddenly could either. That was the biggest pisstake. Adding 9 more official languages didn’t mean that South Africans suddenly couldn’t speak English.

B1 is needed for SWV. And thus higher requirement than ancestry. Has four components. Listening, reading, writing and speaking. The ancestry one doesn’t have writing and reading I believe.
Didn’t have to do anything for ancestry, but for ILR it was basically just a conversation. Makes sense that it would be higher for a skilled worker.
To be fair; the Tories said they want to cut immigration then let everyone in from Ukraine. So that’s partially why figures are sky high.

Seems like the study visas were being exploited.
But this should perhaps be in a separate thread to talk about immigration stats
Yes, study visas were heavily exploited. New rules make it tougher now - can't bring dependents over and same goes for the health care visa - was also being exploited.
Yep, and they reckon the 700-ish Nigerian “nurses” they found who came in on fake qualifications is just the tip of the iceberg. It’s been going on for a very, very long time.
