But also unlikely that they would have a grandfather born in Leicester that would give them a pathway to entry into the UK.

The test has different results standards, as I understand it, with a differing pass mark required for different stages of your immigration
B1 is needed for SWV. And thus higher requirement than ancestry. Has four components. Listening, reading, writing and speaking. The ancestry one doesn’t have writing and reading I believe.

For settlement visas like family or ancestral you take the “easier” test. It excludes writing and reading. For SWV, student and similar you take the “tougher” test that has 4 components.
For the family / ancestry one you just need a “pass”
For the SWV - you must score 43 or more in each module. It is also more expensive.

Didn’t have to do anything for ancestry, but for ILR it was basically just a conversation. Makes sense that it would be higher for a skilled worker.
The SWV one is a 2hr test. Involves summarizing audio clips you only hear once. Writing 300-500 word essays. Using multiple choice to fill in the blanks in sentences and interpreting things like graphs and explaining them verbally.

Yes, study visas were heavily exploited. New rules make it tougher now - can't bring dependents over and same goes for the health care visa - was also being exploited.

Yep, and they reckon the 700-ish Nigerian “nurses” they found who came in on fake qualifications is just the tip of the iceberg. It’s been going on for a very, very long time.
They finally woke up to the issue.
Now, getting a Health Care visa is a long process. A CoS for a health care job was normally issued in a day - people are waiting months and months now - because the Home Office is doing a full on audit of all Home Care sponsors - they were as much to blame. A lot of them exploited workers and kept their passports. threatening to get them deported if they make trouble.
