Strike season is indeed late this year. OR maybe it is people trying to ride the Marikana wave.

Johannesburg - Impala Platinum Holdings [JSE:IMP], the world's No.2 platinum producer, said on Tuesday workers had demanded a second pay hike this year, to effectively double their wages in six months, the latest sign of labour unrest in the sector.
The demand comes as South African miners grapples with a wave of strikes that last month led to the death of 44 people, 34 at the hands of the police.

The unrest has also spread to gold producers, with Gold Fields [JSE:GFI] reporting that 15 000 miners had embarked on a wildcat strike at its KDC operations.

Implats granted workers an increase after a strike shut down production at its key Rustenburg operations in January and February this year, but the platinum producer says workers now want more.

"We believe that current tensions are an issue for the entire industry," said Implats chief executive Terence Goodlace in a statement.

He said that profit margins were under severe pressure "with consequences for all concerned".

South Africa's platinum industry has been struggling to survive as input costs such as electricity have spiked and metals prices fall.

Mines unrest: Politics overtakes genuine issues

"Although workers have genuine labour grievances, it's gone well beyond labour unrest.

"Some politicians are hijacking the disgruntlement among the workers because the mining sector is at the core of political, social and economic order in South Africa," he said.

They are demanding the removal of NUM branch leadership," Gold Fields spokesperson Sven Lunsche told AFP.

"There is also a demand to lower tax on wages."
Don't we all want that.
Do they work for wages or salaries?
If they want a set amount I guess they are paid by the hour?

Do they get salaries? OR are they paid by the number of hours they work?

Hopefully, as a miner, and putting their lives at risk for profits ... they are getting salaries. If not, there is more wrong with the system than I realized.

its the same in most companies. most average salary earners while the golden few get huge salaries. seems the unions are tired of it. of course at corporates people dont stand together so when your boss tells you to go find another job, someone is ready to fill your warm seat.

Time for the unions to end. They are going to destroy this country.

Yay! Then we can become like China and have no independent unions. Great plan! I always wanted ****tier working conditions and less pay! :D

As long as we also become like China and execute people found guilty of corruption... And take the KGB option of sending the bill for the bullet to their family.

I see they are demanding less tax on wages.
If you are on a salary does your Union things not also go away, or atleast the free part?

Going to have to google it.

Oke I'm going to have to get back to you on this one.
We had a employer that decided to go from Wages to salary, and then she decided she wanted to back again, Some of her advantages went away with one and she got more with the other.
Will get back to you.

You are right they have to pay to be in the union.
