Hi everyone,

I upgraded my Galaxy SII I9100 via -> http://www.viotutorials.com/2012/11/how-to-update-samsung-galaxy-s2-gt_21.html
site and details. The phone upgraded and everything works 100% except mobile data.

I take these steps to get mobile data active and working. MTN -> dial *123# -> Choose MMS & WAP Settings.

Configuration files download and I install them. All is well in the world.

Then: I go to Settings -> More Settings -> Mobile Networks
Mobile Data is ticked
Access Point Names
and I see: MTN-DATA and MTN-MMS-GPRS

no internet access at all. All is not well after all.

Contact MTN, change settings: instead of myMTN -> internet, MCC and MNC set according to MTN (655 & 10)
Press menu button and Save

MTN-DATA dissapears off the list and even when I try to create a new APN it is still not there.

Any ideas or help would be so much appreciated as the only way to internet access is through wifi.

This happened to me as well. It was the straw that broke the camel's back and I ported to Cell C, no issues since.

Create it manually:
Name: MTN Data (or whatever)
APN: myMTN
Proxy:
Port:
Username:
Password:
Server:
MMSC:
MMS Proxy:
MMS Port:
MCC: 665
MNC: 10
Authentication Type: PAP
APN Type: default
APN Protocol: IPv4
APN enable/disable: Enabled
Bearer: Unspecified

You want the MMS one as well?

Quey_Quick & Maverick Jester - are you guys high? Internet access worked before the phone was upgraded, how can it be the Carrier/SIM?

It's MTN.

I tested with my cell c contract SIM and it worked. So I ported.

You will need a new SIM card.

Be prepared to pay MTN R150.00 for a SIM swap.

:(

Thanks for the reply lcbxx. See that is exactly it.. even when I try to create a new APN, and save it, the newly created APN is not saved and not in the list. I can do this till the cows come home.. Reboot completely, battery out... sim card out... wait a day and try again... and nothing. The MMS settings are still there.. but not the browser one.

So I have been digging around a little... in the link I posted the first post, I used Odin to flash the CSC as well with the accompanied file. (I know.. what the hell am I doing when I don't fully understand it). Anyway, I have a feeling this is where the issue might be. I found a couple of threads on here explaining how to get your IMEI and then *#272*<IMEI># to choose a different CSC, but by phone tells me to go throw myself off a cliff. I am in the process of searching the CSC file needed to try with Odin.

Other than that, I might need to factory reset this thing.. but not in the mood for that just yet.

Quey_Quick & Maverick Jester - Look, sims, yeah I haven't changed or tested with a different one. I cannot confirm or deny it would be that. But, as lcbxx said... mobile data using "data enabler widget" worked, well I would say great.. but yeah.. it worked without issues.

Edit: I will however test it and check to make sure that is not the issue.. :)

I flashed with Odin and I know what I am doing.

It is a SIM card issue, specifically with the older MTN SIMs.

And oh yes the CSC code is just the region. Each country or region has a different one.

And a new cell c SIM is 99c. Just test with one and see.

This is an issue with MTN SIM's. You will most likely need to replace yours.

New sim did not work for 2 MTN S2's I upgraded for other people, they got hold of someone at MTN who gave them the APN settings to enter manually.

Tried all this and got gatvol with MTN data support who know nothing.

On mine, they would not save after entering them manually. Perhaps with a new SIM they would.

I'll prance into town a little later and get myself one.. take it from there and update... The whole thing is just a little weird.. and I am learning as I go...

Thanks again for all the replies.

I have a 14 year old MTN SIM (blue) in my S2 and I am not having this issue. On my Optimus One I had to play around with the MCC & MNC vaues before it saved the APN config on an updated firmware. Google some options on XDA-Developers?

If you MMS APN works, you can try and change the APN Type option from MMS to Internet/Default and see if that works. I recall accidentally configuring the MMS APN as a Data APN initially some time back and it worked without hassle.

Did you try manually selecting MTN in the Network Operators first?
And after entering the APN have you tried tapping the menu button and select save and not just the back back button?

Ok... so couldn't really get to getting a sim card and RICA and blah blah. So I contacted MTN one last time.

Explained to the agent what was happening. I got asked to hold while they check something. Their words: you have an extremely old SIM.. and HAVE to upgrade the SIM. So.. with that said, I will go this route for now and check it out and report back.

Thank you everyone for the help and comments. I will now go and check out some custom ROMS and get to know the wonderful possibilities of android. :D
