Important note when upgrading from ADSL to VDSL

If you intend changing ISPs often, good luck with the downtime caused by transferring the line from one to the next. The better option would be to keep your line with Telkom, then you can chnage ISPs at the drop of a hat. Managing the line might be better via the ISPs, but underneath it's still the same hardware, so no benefit there :)
 
Well the was my first change, ever, basically,
Who's the process/impact of having my line released from Telkom to get it now owned by MWEB.

That's changed. The longest line downtime is now between Telkom and other ISPs, Telkom Internet have the same priority/tools as other ISP, no more advantage to keep your line there. Transferring your line between non-Telkom ISP should be really quick now.
 
Maybe you guys will know more about this

so requested a vdsl upgrade as my area /exchange has it enabled?So this has not yet happened :( 2 weeks and going,but now i hear the exchange is having a Planned maintenance at the exchange?

"The max speed attainable is estimated up to 19.3mbps.
Planned maintenance is currently ongoing for the exchange equipment. It's expected to be completed by midnight today."
 
I also want to upgrade to VDSL 10mbit (but I believe you need to be less than 2km from exchange to get the speed benefits)

I think i'm 3.3km <-- eish

My line sync's at 7mbit with 8 to 9SNR <my line is supposedly upto 10mbit ADSL>

My area recently got this exchange upgrade to "upto 10mbit VDSL"

but i'm doubtfull it will be worth the "upgrade for me" (as I said i'm 3.3km away- i'll propably sync at 7mbit still on VDSL)

Forking out R1500 to R2000 for a VDSL modem and no real speed gain is a bit pointless

Your max sync is probably 8Mbps. At that speed there is no reason to go for VDSL (If it's even VDSL, the map is broken and shows everything as being VDSL instead of ADSL).
 
on the map I can see that area's maybe 3 to 4km away from me shows ADSL 10mbit etc. my area says vdsl. but like you said. I might still get 8mbit (i'm currently only getting 7mbit solid. 8mbit if I push it .. but on 8mbit I get disconnections every 12 to 24hours)

What's your SNR, attenuation and sync speed right now?
 
Syncing at 6240kbps at the moment (I push it down manually)

Downstream Upstream
Line Coding(Trellis): On On
SNR Margin (0.1 dB): 116 70
Attenuation (0.1 dB): 460 245


Normally I can do 7mbit without issues (SNR at around 8 to 9) can also do 8192kbps but then SNR goes down to 6-7 <if it's rainy outside or cold then my line would drop intermittently every 12 to 24hours>

Your line is probably exposed to the elements then.
 
I was told that VDSL works better with the SNR and error corrections. not sure if i'll be able to get solid 8mbit or 10mbit maybe

Well it does mostly due to the added spectrum, but since your attenuation is so high, I doubt it would really make a difference at 8Mbps, that's if they even allow you to be on a VDSL port. If the line is exposed, the change to VDSL modulation wouldn't help you. At that distance there is no difference in speed between ADSL2+ and VDSL.

I am seriously considering upgrading my 2MB ADSL line to a 4MB or 10MB.
I am currently a telkom customer but I know there are ISP's out there that offer way better rates.
I just don't know who's the better one to go with.
Any advice?

Go through support threads. Currently stay away from Afrihost due to network problems and I would have recommended CW, but the last couple of weeks have also seen high latency in the evenings.
Oh, and definitely not WebAfrica. Vox is probably a good bet.
 
I am on a 10Mbs uncapped ADSL line. Line is stable and working well. Typical ping is 40ms, download speed is between 8,60-9,40 Mb and upload usually around 0,6Mb. This is using the Speedtest App on my iPhone.

Telkom website says VDSL is available in my area and my modem/router is capable of handling VDSL. Given it is only a 10Mb line, is there any point (or harm) in requesting that they change me over to VDSL? I would love to upgrade to a 20Mb or faster line to make the most of my 4K TV using Netflix, but can't justify the extra R200/month cost right now. Telkom is my ISP.
