Hello.

I am in the process of getting my importers code from SARS.
There are just two documents that are needed that I am unsure about.

"Resolution/content or other authority to apply, as applicable"
"Agency contract between agent and foreign principle"

Any help will be appreciated.

The first document, a "Resolution/content or other authority to apply, as applicable" is a letter from your company stating that you have the authority from your company to apply for the importers code. If you are the sole director or member, then you state that in the letter.

The second document is is quite a new requirement and seems completely ridiculous. I got my importers code before the act was amended to include this so I don't know how necessary it is. This implies that in order to be granted an importers code, you need to have a distribution contract with a foreign supplier. I'd also like to know more about this one.

Finally applied for an importer's code today. SARS agent captures the application on system immediately upon receipt of completed application and required documents.

Confirmation document is due to be emailed in two weeks. No need to collect.

Some pointers for individuals or sole proprietors applicants with SA ID to make the process seamless. Agents will not allow missing sections to be completed at their desks.

DA 185 form:

Complete sections:

3. Include police certified ID copy and take ID along.
4.
5. Include completed DA 185 4A1 form.
6. Proof of residence required in the form of a municipal account. Include cellphone or Telkom landline statement to verify the contact details quoted.
7. Bank details proof required in the form of statement or bank stamped confirmation.
8. Only a tax clearance certificate is required if you have a tax number. No need for PAYE nor UIF.
9.
10.
11. Enter your details and mark 'Other' and state individual/sole proprietor. Include a letter from you confirming you give yourself permission to apply. Quote ID number as reference.

Complete the following sections of DA 185 4A1 form:

1.
2.
3.

Not all the information and requirements apply to individual/sole proprietor according to the description in the sections but consider that it's a government department so there's no choice but to follow the status quo in order to obtain the importer's licence.

If you're going to SARS Alberton, there is a police station less than 10 minutes away at 56 Van Riebeeck Ave, Alberton for ID certification. Got mine done in 2 minutes.

Can anyone provide some info on form DA 185 4A1 for individuals? Whose details should be included for the Clearing Agent? Or should I specify that it's going to be self-cleared?

Following this. Looking the the claws are closing in on those who just want to do a few amazon orders a year.
