Importing an iPhone 6 from overseas

Hi,

Great article. Just want to find out. I have family overseas who is willing to take out a contract for me for the 6+ on Verizon. Im currently using vodacom here so would this version work? As far as I know verizon iphones are unlocked. Can you tell me what steps I should take to make sure the device doesn't get locked to Verzion?

Verizon iPhones are all factory unlocked. I currently have a Verizon iPhone 6 model A1549 and it is working perfectly here in SA.

Great! Did you just pop in your local sim card before popping in the verizon sim?

Hi there. Glad you enjoyed the article :)

To be honest, i'm not entirely sure if the Verizon phones are unlocked. Maybe you can get clarity for us from your US family for us. Usually, if the device comes with a SIM card, as long as you do not put that SIM card from that carrier in the device first to activate it using that SIM card, then it should be ok to use with other networks. I'm not sure if this is the case with the Verizon device, or if that device is straight-up locked to Verizon from the get go.

Well there was a Verizon SIM card inside, I'm not sure if it was a dummy or a real working sim. But I removed the sim and inserted my Mtn SIM card before switching the phone on. When it switched on it immediately connected to MTN network. Been working perfectly ever since.

I've confirmed that the phones are indeed unlocked. I was just worried about the LTE band situation. But ill be sure not to put in the verizon card first.

You don't have to worry about the LTE bands. The iPhone 6 & 6+ have more bands now. You can google the bands that the different models use.

Regarding the LTE band, it depends what model it is. According to the Apple LTE compatibility list, the model which supports Verizon is A1549 and A1522. You can check out the article where I go through the differences between the two models. Basically, both models will work, but only the A1586 and A1524 will work with Telkom Mobile/8ta LTE band.
 
If I buy the T-Mobile contract free version of the iPhone 6 on store.apple.com and activate it with my South African sim in the phone, will it be unlocked and work?

Yes it will. But as per the article, LTE on Telkom mobile won't work. That's the only difference i'm aware of at this moment according to the specs

Cool. Did you just walk into an Apple store and ask for a "device only" Verizon iPhone 6?
