The iPhone is pregnable

On Android I can delete WhatsApp from my phone and it’ll ask whether I want to keep the data. If I say yes, then reinstall WhatsApp, all my chats are still there.

But that’s not the same thing as setting up WhatsApp on a completely different phone.

Set up WhatsApp on one phone and create a few chats. Then move the SIM to another phone, download WhatsApp, and register the same number again. You’ll see there’s no chat history on the new phone, and WhatsApp will log you out of the original device instantly.

There’s no chat DATA.

There’s infinite Chat HISTORY.

It have chats going back to 2011/11/23 on this brand new install with no restore.

And if you don’t have the contacts synched they’ll simply be anonymised by number…but the crims don’t care about that.

Nope. It will be a blank WhatsApp. Zero history of anything. The only thing that might show is groups you're part of.

Aaah, you are quite right it’s only groups that show up.

Sorry I don’t really use WhatsApp for direct messaging so didn’t spot that..and clearly have too many bloody groups.

Still would be easy enough to go into those groups and message people out of them directly.

@NeonNinja were all the people contacted possibly part of group chats?

Yes. They most likely opened the group info to harvest the numbers.

Always a good idea to have a broken kak phone with you and your main phone in the cubby or where ever.

Then just hand them your broken phone and say it's flat.

Some of them were part of group chats.

But the most baffling part is them Whatsapping ONLY people I RECENTLY talked to.

Oh, from first hand experience of helping a colleague, Meta favours the crooks by a margin, you will have a hard time getting it back but you will likely eventually get it sorted by emailing them.

iPhones can't be easily 'opened'.

What likely happened is that they transferred Whatsapp to their device and whatsapp sent a pin to your device and you have all messages showing on your lock screen (bad idea). I turn that off by default so you have to be logged in to read messages. What did you save your line name as, the phone number perhaps? Or did you enable emergency contact and provide your own number? It's likely they got it from that or a contact you have in there. It's unlikely they unlocked your phone with the pin enabled.

The reason I'm leaning towards they opened my device is that they also messaged people in my WhatsApp business, the most recent I had active chats with.

As for notifications they won't appear unless the phone was unlocked. If still locked, only the app name would appear and then the notification would be readable upon unlocking.

How did they get access to his Instagram though? Was it tied to that phone number?

Anyways I'm selling the insurance replacement iPhone. Ad won't get accepted here on MyBB.

Boet, that's an elaborate scam right there! Kudos! Complain that your phone was stolen then "sell" the replacement phone haha. JK

I see you had an iPhone pro. Sadly those are major targets. Anywhere you have it out in public and the three cameras are visible, they will hunt you down if they see it. One of the most sought after phones right now.
Ya whatever dude

And they are…neither was compromised here. Your WhatsApp was just synced to another device.

But you could easily see if they were by going to check the activity logs for either. But your password would also have been changed for both etc.
How would you sync whatsapp to another device? There is no data stored on the sim card? It's just the number. Unless iOS works differently, but to restore or sync whatsapp on my phone I need to log into my google account to pull the backup.

Read a bit further.

I thought all your chats (without their history) show up, but turns out it's only your Group chats.

So the assumption is they harvested the contacts out of there.

You can easily sync WhatsApp to another device (at leat on iOS), no backup required, but that means having access to WhatsApp itself and generating the QR code.

Yeah I did catch up eventually :-)

Exactly. I had a 6 digit passcode.

I put the phone in lost mode around 22:00 on the same day. and then it wasn't erased becauese data was "off", it only was erased (I think) when it came back online the following night (Friday).

These ****ers were still Whatsapping people on Monday!!! Which I don't know how
Sorry if its been asked. Did you have fingerprint lock on your whatsapp?
