Below is a statement issued by an American politician who had an affair with another woman. However despicable his behaviour, if you read through the statement, this is a pretty impressive statement for a politician, especially the parts that I highlighted - normally it is a case of denial or downplaying something like this ...

STATEMENT OF SENATOR JOHN EDWARDS

August 8, 2008

Chapel Hill, North Carolina

In 2006, I made a serious error in judgment and conducted myself in a way that was disloyal to my family and to my core beliefs. I recognized my mistake and I told my wife that I had a liaison with another woman, and I asked for her forgiveness. Although I was honest in every painful detail with my family, I did not tell the public. When a supermarket tabloid told a version of the story, I used the fact that the story contained many falsities to deny it. But being 99% honest is no longer enough.

I was and am ashamed of my conduct and choices, and I had hoped that it would never become public. With my family, I took responsibility for my actions in 2006 and today I take full responsibility publicly. But that misconduct took place for a short period in 2006. It ended then. I am and have been willing to take any test necessary to establish the fact that I am not the father of any baby, and I am truly hopeful that a test will be done so this fact can be definitively established. I only know that the apparent father has said publicly that he is the father of the baby. I also have not been engaged in any activity of any description that requested, agreed to or supported payments of any kind to the woman or to the apparent father of the baby.

It is inadequate to say to the people who believed in me that I am sorry, as it is inadequate to say to the people who love me that I am sorry. In the course of several campaigns, I started to believe that I was special and became increasingly egocentric and narcissistic. If you want to beat me up – feel free. You cannot beat me up more than I have already beaten up myself. I have been stripped bare and will now work with everything I have to help my family and others who need my help.

I have given a complete interview on this matter and having done so, will have nothing more to say.

But Edwards was the white version of Obama. Hope, change, love and peace gushing Mr perfect in touch with the poor and underprivileged everyday folk:o

ROFL I guess that rules him out for VP.

Oh and you didn't honestly expect him to have said anything else did you

Honesty is the correct way, but not when your caught. He should have been honest from the start

i can't to this day understand why people think that people are not able to seperate the way they act in their private and public lives. the fact he has cheated on his wife says little about his ability to do things which are work related so to say.

What impressed me, was that he admitted his big ego.

Milomak, I guess it goes to your general trustworthiness as a human being: people think that if a politician lied to his wife about a mistress, he will also lie to his constituents about other matters.

What is the polls going to say, haven't been on top of the US Election in recent weeks.

Damn! My hopes was on Edwards (even if Hilary or Obama was there:p)

@PrivateInSa

He was honest towards his wife and family, coming out into public for everything you do wrong? How did this effect his political judgment? We all make mistakes.

Be he didn't, he was honest towards her. :(

He may have been honest after the fact but having an affair is hardly honest.

Q: Between Obama and McCain, one of them has had (and admitted) and affair.
Guess which one?

McCain 30 odd years ago. Obama could have one with his neighbour's dog and the lemmings would find a way to justify continuing to support him :o

Edwards furious with ABC News

Edwards had hoped to control the news cycle by making his admission late on a Friday night when the country was watching the Olympics and the long weekend yawned ahead.

According to multiple sources, Edwards was apoplectic that ABC News broke the story on its website and began promoting it early on Friday, giving the rest of the media a chance to play catch-up and site ABC News’ report. (Representatives for Edwards did not return a call or e-mail for comment.)

Edwards subsequently made solicitous calls to multiple reporters including CBS News’ Bob Schieffer, who also talked to a distraught Elizabeth Edwards

So it was OK to have affairs 30 years ago, but not today?

I don't get it?

I mentioned it so you don't get confused with this 'leftie smear'

Watchdog blasts NYT McCain 'affair' story

When that story came out I actually thought it had been planted by the McCain campaign to try convince people that he could still get it up.

I think most people are worried that 'Ole Grandpa John is going to pop his clogs if he gets out of bed too fast, (never mind anything else of his getting up too fast), so nothing like a little 'affair' story to sex him up a bit.

Then again, it forced everyone to imagine a 72 year old having sex, which is really creepy. (Sorry, I'm feeling a bit dirty, need to go for a quick shower)

i really don't believe that. many a successful business man has been through a public divorce that has not effected his business. i'm sure the converse is true for women.

linking a person's private life to what a person does professionally is naive at best.
