I'm thinking of installing in-car video cameras and recorders in my (private) cars. These are sometimes called Vehicle Witness Cameras.

They basically record video and audio when you drive. Events such as a sudden stop or accident are automatically saved for later retrieval. They're a sort of cheapy Black Box (with video) that can be used for various purposes such as accident recording, etc.

I've found a few foreign sites that specialise in this equipment, and there's some nifty kit out there. The UK (the world's most surveilled society) seems to have quite an industry in this stuff, and it makes more sense than trying US-based suppliers as SA has greater commonality in vehicles, etc.

* Dogcam - Roadhawk DC-1 in car camera (UK), 200 quid.
* Novus - Blackvue.
* A UK webshop/supplier.

Some of the these have built-in GPS and the software maps to Google Earthy (watch this video, for a very good example or current tech).

I'm looking for something exactly like the Roadhawk DC-1, but a "black box" version fitted under the dash, and tiny concealed camera with higher res than the DC-1. I don't want an easily-stolen box behind my rear-view mirror.

Anyone with any experience of in-car camera systems? Do they work OK? Pitfalls? Tips, advice and guidance? What to avoid? What to get? Anything appropriate for SA market with more concealed cams not attracting thieves? And is there anyone locally who can supply and install? I've of course searched the web, but nothing immediately promising pops up.

Edit: By the way, this seems to be a business opportunity in SA for a young budding entrepreneur ...

Not exactly what you're looking for, but there are a few Android apps that do this quite well. So basically basically any decent phone (+windscreen mount) running Android will do the job well.

Ta. Not really a viable option.

Having to manually attach devices every time one drives is just too much hassle.

This thing must work every time a car is started, and work all the time.

I bought a prestigio dash cam a few weeks ago from
http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/67108327/Prestigio_1080p_HD_car_video_recorder_with_2_0_TFT_LCD.html

pros:
much cheaper than equivalent products i found
surprisingly good video, high res and very stable (i.e. no shaking)
switches on and off at car start/stop
good quality sound recording

cons
no GPS or google maps integration (only more expensive brands seems to have it)
attaches to window with suction cup, so not that discreet, but it is small and personally it doesn't bother me
you need to buy an SD card (not included). I have a 32 gig card for 4 hours of recording (in HD)
the SD card is not that easy to remove, depending how you install the cam in the car

So far i'm very happy with it and it does exactly what i expected from it.

I drive alone all day, and then recording myself, no thank you.
Maybe for taxi's.

You drive alone? No other cars on the road? I think you misunderstood where the camera is mounted maybe? It doesn't record inside the cabin, it records the front of your car and other cars (ie what you see when you're driving).

What's the point of this camera? What purpose will it serve, uncle Arthur?

I saw a you tube one off inside a taxi, he fell asleep and crash.

A big company put it now in their business cars, watch if workers are awake, safety belts on and watch the road.

I saw 2 drivers reading a newspaper while driving.
Someone I know watch dvd while driving.

It's people like this that ruin driving. And when they cause a prang they blame everyone else. On open roads it turns into a he-said-she-said no-win, which I want to avoid. An always-on camera can at least help to nail these yahoos.

Since found that Roadhawk have a local agent on www.roadhawk.co.za.

We can start a new website www.youdrivelikea****.co.za where you can upload video / pictures of people talking on their phones while driving, reading while driving, swerving all over, going through stop streets etc. I see these everyday so would never be short of stuff to upload
