My career started as a SharePoint Dev so that's why such a task was given to me. Leaning towards custom but 3 months is too long apparently

Confluence but it ishorrid.
Or maybe it was setup badly.
Confluence works well if you set up the correct spaces. Add Hipchat for messaging...
Remedy is a major undertaking considering the OP was looking for freeware.
Remedy is like SAP- takes major customisation. At some point there will be PAIN of note! Setting it up how you want it and training users to use it, especially when you incorporate problem and change management.
For a SMB Remedy is a very bad idea.
