My career started as a SharePoint Dev so that's why such a task was given to me. Leaning towards custom but 3 months is too long apparently :whistle:
Can't hate SharePoint because it taught me a lot but trust me. I never want to go back :sick:

Was https://www.servicenow.com/ looked at or is it a case of use/develop with what you know

Look at Remedy, and let it take over your whole company :p

Remedy is a major undertaking considering the OP was looking for freeware.
Remedy is like SAP- takes major customisation. At some point there will be PAIN of note! Setting it up how you want it and training users to use it, especially when you incorporate problem and change management.

For a SMB Remedy is a very bad idea.
 
Use Jira - you can even use the SaaS version and then have no hassle with backups/maintenance etc.
 
A week later almost and the JIRA guys haven't come to the party.
Going to just install the furking thing on a VM and test it so I can give my feedback to the stakeholders.
 
Confluence works well if you set up the correct spaces. Add Hipchat for messaging...

This is what I am a little worried about. JIRA team here isn't the most clued up from our conversations and I don't have the time to learn a new system, config it, deploy and support it right now :(
Still better than custom dev'ing it I suppose..
