Hi there,

has anyone else received an sms from this number "0820009972" stating the following:

"Vodacom has detected that your cellphone is using the incorrect Internet or MMS settings. Please reply 'yes' (free SMS) to receive the correct settings."

I haven't replied to it and won't do so seeing my phone is a Vodacom contract phone and came with everything set-up.

This a catch as I suspect?

Sometimes i just have to wonder who comes up with these stuff...

IMO, most of the time its useless things they come up with, instead of usefull things like for example OTA Email Settings. Or a facility to check your Data Usage/Bundle via email(like the SMS equivalent).

Hi

It's not a catch , it's sent from a System called Touch Point. It tracks events in real time including any errors made , allowing Vodacom to notify our clients of the best action to be taken.

Eg if you use your internet browser and attempt to connect via an incorrect APN or attempt to send or recieve an MMS with the incorrect settings , it will be detected by the system the sms based on your handset's capabilities.

Long day guys sorry.

Meant to say that the sms will be sent based on your handset's capabilities

Thanks VD. :)

I'll ignore it then because my settings are correct, they cant be changed. :)

would it not be prudent just to send the new settings, so there is no suspicion of a scam.

I might be wrong but I'd think its better to prompt action from the user. On some hansets I have noticed that each connection profile has for eg. an input field for a homepage.
Just automatically sending the new settings might peev some loser of drastically if his m.facebook.com is suddenly 'just gone'.

On certain handsets you can decide on which profile to save the settings.

How can I get the correct settings sent to my Tytn II? I'm running a custom rom - so when I try the usual way it says PHONE NOT SUPPORTED or something... and I can't get MMS to work when doing the settings manually :(

I got the same message when I first put my old sim into my new phone, I said 'yes' to the sms but nothing ever arrived back?!!! wtf

You need to install the network settings cab file to your TyTN II. PM Me your email address and i'll send you a copy of it.

I keep responding to these messages but I never get any settings sent to me !!!! VODACOM WTF.......

I just got the same sms out of the blue, dunno how my settings suddenly changed, first suspected a scam so checked on here first. then replied yes to see if I can get the 'correct' settings and spy out whats different, but nothing came back...

Well i got an iphone 4 and got this message earlier on as well.

I selected update and nothing seemed to happen, except now i cannot connect to the internet with anything other than wifi.

Im getting the following error "pdp authentication failure". Im not sure if its related to the settings message since nothing seemed to change and i also did a network reset on my phone. So anyone know how to sort this out or what caused it?

Please check that you still have the iphone apn ( iphone.vodacom.za) General Settings Cellular data network

Hi, my settings are correct. I changed it to the "internet" apn just in case and still the same problem of not being able to "activate the cellular data network" along with "pdp authentication failure". I eventually did a network reset which brought it back to iphone.vodacom.za. Also removed the sim, rebooted and slotted it in again but nada.

 I see that dailing *111# and requesting settings from there only yields "You have a Desire HD, we have no settings for you, now run along and feel like we made you smile today. That is all"
One wonders what replying yes and getting an sms reply would have yielded in any event if the settings are not available to start with...

Either way, I think my APN problem was merely VC psychicly detecting APNdroid doing its job changing the APN from internet to internetapndroid to stop connections when I dont want any data up'd or down'd, and so they sent the domesticated OOB-shark to growl and bark at me... :p

Got the same problem as Archie, got the sms, replied "yes", and no internet since. Tried manually entering the wap settings but still nothing...

I've also been getting these sms, which I consider as spam. My cell is working fine, so why do I need to download other settings from Vodacom. Not too worry, I'm busy porting to Cell C, so much better data bundle prices. I've been paying R28 for 30meg (x12 months = R336 for 360meg). Now I can get 3 Gig for R400 at CellC which works out at R33 per month for 250meg per month. The best part is, the bundle is valid for a year, no more recharging every month or losing your data after every 2nd month of not using it.
