Increase in unsolicited calls from VoIP

Is it just me or have these calls now increased since the POPIA act?

I am now continuously called every day, once a day from numbers identified by shouldianswer as VoIP. I don't answer them as I recently also received a Whatsapp to come get me some inheritance money.

Is there no ****ing way they can regulate VoIP better? I mean seriously how can people just generate new numbers to phone you from, my Ignore / Block list on my phone is getting quite lengthy.

If you switch to VOIP your provider should give you an easy GUI to block any unsolicited incoming number that has dialed you once.

Easy as pie - and the end of many unsolicited inbound calling - because you can block all of them.

VOIP systems logs all incoming calls, and each VOIP number has an IP address...not hard to trace. And well you can block IPs through network firewalls.

Blocking unsolicited calls was one of the joys switching to VOIP.

In there you will see 087 is allocated to VoIP, which is being reported to you by that service as they have no other information. My VoIP line is 021 so will get reported to you as geographical fixed line, unless they have other info on my number. There is nothing wrong with VoIP, it just gets abused like lots of things.

Until you answer the call and report the number as ABC Insurance company it will continue to be called VoIP. We all use VoIP every day and there is nothing wrong with the technology

You can answer and demand the caller tells you how they got your number under the POPI act, but most times they will give you some BS answer or hang up.

Telemarketers suck, POPI is largely ignored, but there is nothing wrong with VoIP. Hope that makes sense, even though it doesnt help alleviate your issue.

I install this then transfer calls to Lenny to deal with. Then playback the recordings for a good laugh!

As a rule I don't answer 087 numbers. Only once did I turn out to be legit and they actually left a proper voicemail.

Telecoms and POPIA is vastly misunderstood. Most AVM operators know the 087 stigmatism and use geographical numbers. Some even use mobile numbers to call you, but it comes at a premium for the AVM operator.

All the mobile numbers in SA are known. Numbers are not personal/private and not covered by POPIA. Android's spam detection is far superior to Truecaller's, and should let you know its spam, unless the caller changes his number, but Google will pick this up within a few tens of calls.

You have the option to add your number to the DMA database. Good operators will sync with this DB and not spam you with AVM.

My advice is to answer and press 9, which is usually the DNC option. They should not call you again. If they do, complain to your mobile telco, but you can only do so if you selected DNC and they keep on harassing you.
