'Super highways not super high prices'
The Independent Democrats fully support ICASA’s report on Telkom’s inflated online ADSL fees. It is important for the regulator to exert its independence, especially when it comes to the protection of the consumers.
“The ID is however concerned about the fact that Telkom is disputing the content and the findings of the report. Internet and telephone charges in South Africa are ridiculous (60 to 100 times expensive than in other developed and developing countries), as the recent Gardner Report has revealed.
This obviously has a negative economic impact on us as higher percentage of operating expenses of companies are being swallowed by data and telephone costs. This results in South African companies being uncompetitive in the global environment. We should be encouraging business not discouraging.
In addition, in a country where 90% of the country’s population has no access to the internet, we need to find mechanisms to allow all South Africans to have access to the information 'super highway' through the provision of quality and affordable communication services. In short we need to bridge the information divide in our country. Telkom, as an important player in this sector, must start respecting the findings of an independent regulator, ICASA, and stop using its monolistic attitude, bully-boy tactics and threatening to withold future investment in the sector.
Instead of complaining, Telkom must begin to understand its pivotal role in developing this country and realising South Africa’s full potential. We all have an obligation, and Telkom is no exception. It must come to the party,” said Vincent Gore, ID Spokesperson on Communications.
