What follows is the official statement from the Independent Democrats regarding the latest Telkom debacle:

Attention: PR-Wires/News Editors
For immediate release

'Super highways not super high prices'

The Independent Democrats fully support ICASA’s report on Telkom’s inflated online ADSL fees. It is important for the regulator to exert its independence, especially when it comes to the protection of the consumers.

“The ID is however concerned about the fact that Telkom is disputing the content and the findings of the report. Internet and telephone charges in South Africa are ridiculous (60 to 100 times expensive than in other developed and developing countries), as the recent Gardner Report has revealed.

This obviously has a negative economic impact on us as higher percentage of operating expenses of companies are being swallowed by data and telephone costs. This results in South African companies being uncompetitive in the global environment. We should be encouraging business not discouraging.

In addition, in a country where 90% of the country’s population has no access to the internet, we need to find mechanisms to allow all South Africans to have access to the information 'super highway' through the provision of quality and affordable communication services. In short we need to bridge the information divide in our country. Telkom, as an important player in this sector, must start respecting the findings of an independent regulator, ICASA, and stop using its monolistic attitude, bully-boy tactics and threatening to withold future investment in the sector.
Instead of complaining, Telkom must begin to understand its pivotal role in developing this country and realising South Africa’s full potential. We all have an obligation, and Telkom is no exception. It must come to the party,” said Vincent Gore, ID Spokesperson on Communications.

WHOAA !!!!

Go Independent Democrats GO !!!!
More statements like that .the sooner TELKOM will realize that the can not keep whole nation to ransom. Let’s keep up the pressure.....

Aherm......

having spent the bulk of last week calling our countries political parties to action on this, I am damn impressed that so many have stood up to be counted. My phone bill this month is going to be astronomical.

Hmmm... it's full of grammar and spelling errors. The ID spokesperson for commuinications must be a regular poster on these forums... :D

*ducks*

I'm so glad I voted for them last elections!!! Patricia Delille for the win!

ANC needs to drop the non-statement statement routine. If they support ICASA then let them say so publicly.

Agreed, they can no longer sit on the fence, the public needs to know where they stand.

Besides any spelling or grammatical errors the statement might contain - it clearly shows they did their homework on the subject. I am impressed with the statement. (Makes the DA's statement look even more like drivel).

LOL....thanx for the effort :p

This is good news.....the more ppl support ICASA the better. The ANC must decide who's side their on!

I'd rather parties took a bit longer to respond, as the ID have, if it means their response will actually have some substance.

(Well done to the IFP though - their statement was quick, and they're obviously clued up)

The DA must be really regretting their decision now.

Oh, and mid last week I emailed the DA to ask them how they justified their "report", and I am still waiting for a reply. Go (away) DA.

I think either word could work when describing telkom.

I will be voting ID.

I think (i may be wrong), the other word is monoLITHIC - which basically means big, and immovable.

The ANC supports Telkom. They own 40% of Telkom. Their top brass belong to the same exclusive clubs. If you critisize Telkom you critisize the ANC. And that is simply not allowable - you should know this. :)

The ANC is pissed off at ICASA. ICASA is much too independent. You cannot have a socialist government with centralised power if you allow every Tom, D1ck and Harry to make up the rules. ICASA should know this.

buddy old pal....the ANC do not own 40% of Telkom. The GOVERNMENT own 40-ish percent of telkom.
The ANC is not the government. There is a lot of ANC in the government but there are also lots of other political parties represented that make up the government. The government is not the ANC.

Debbie2 made a very good post regarding this exact misconception. cant find it but i know your analytical mind will seek it. ;)

OK I take your point. I really meant the government, that is controlled by the ANC. It makes little or no difference to my statement does it? I think you're nitpicking. :D
