New Delhi - India is planning to test launch a new nuclear missile that for the first time would give it the capability of hitting the major Chinese cities of Beijing and Shanghai.

The government has hailed the Agni-V missile, with a range of 5 000km, as a major boost to its efforts to counter China's regional dominance and become an Asia power in its own right. The test launch was expected to come as early as Wednesday evening.

"It will be a quantum leap in India's strategic capability," said Ravi Gupta, spokesperson for India's Defence Research and Development Organisation, which built the missile.

China is far ahead of India in the missile race, with intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching anywhere in the country. Currently, the longest-range Indian missile, the Agni-III, has a range of only 3 500km and falls short of many major Chinese cities.

India and China fought a war in 1962 and continue to nurse a border dispute. India has also been suspicious of Beijing's efforts to increase its influence in the Indian Ocean in recent years.

"While China doesn't really consider India any kind of a threat or any kind of a rival, India definitely doesn't think in the same way," said Rahul Bedi, a defence analyst in New Delhi.

Game-changer

Government officials said the missile should not be seen as a threat.

"We have a declared no-first-use policy, and all our missile systems, they are not country specific. There is no threat to anybody," Gupta said. "Our missile systems are purely for deterrence and to meet our security needs."

The launch window for the missile test, which is being conducted on Wheeler Island off India's east coast, opens on Wednesday evening and closes on Friday, Gupta said.

The Agni-V is a solid-fuel, three-stage missile designed to carry a 1.5-ton nuclear warhead. It stands 17.5m tall, has a launch weight of 50 tons and was built at a reported cost of $486m.

"Agni-V is a game-changer and a technological marvel," VK Saraswat, scientific adviser to the defence minister, was quoted as telling The Hindu newspaper.

The missile could also be used to carry multiple warheads or to launch satellites into orbit.

Mandatory comment: I thought they were at odds with Pakistan. I wonder what sanctions will be imposed on them?

Yes I would like to hear from the pro america members when India is getting invaded oops I mean saved.

Closer to home, I hope this does not piss off China, otherwise good bye BRICS...

Should be interesting to see what the west does regarding india, i am not sure though who india supports. They not big fans of pakistan but i have not really noticed many issues with russia or china.

Ban nuclear weapons, at some point we will destroy ourselves, at least with nukes out the equation it's one less avenue the human race have to destroy themselves.

Having played starcraft and warcraft I would disagree that it's very hard to wipe out your opponents without nukes but they do make it very easy.

Have you managed to drop 20 or 50 nukes on a continent, what was outcome in starcraft, we are comparing a game to real life but heck let's gooi it and see where it goes.

Why would the US invade India? India never signed the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

North Korea was a party to the treaty but announced its withdrawal on 10 January 2003; its withdrawal became effective ninety days later.

Yet they are not allowed to test nukes and get heavily sanctioned. Why can the US build nukes? They also signed the treaty but i am not fully understanding why they are exempt.

Why haven't iran pulled out of it? it takes 90 days to be removed and then you should in theory be allowed to build and test nukes.

Enemy of my enemy and all that. Pakistan = Muslims and China = Communists, both not very popular groups among Republicans.

China wants to build bases in Pakistan.

India and the US signed a military alliance quite recently.

Ahhh interesting so the big war is coming :D. Should be an epic battle decided on who pushes buttons faster to destroy the enemy.

O yea our nukes landed first w00t w00t

Cause nobody would hide their stash

So the answer is to let every country develop and arm themselves in fear of being attacked. Sounds like a recipe for nuclear hell on earth coming to a town near you.

You just need some crazy mofo like the truman and it's on. Luckily those were the first nukes but imagine the japs and everyone else had nukes, it would not have ended well for our race. So all it is going to take is one crazy ******* to drop one and it's game over for the rest of us.
