Information bill passed
2013-04-25 16:17

Cape Town - The National Assembly on Thursday afternoon passed the protection of state information bill.

It now has to be signed into law by President Jacob Zuma.

The office of the ANC Chief Whip welcomed the move in a statement, saying the passing of the bill is a culmination of over five years of work by the two houses of Parliament.

"Extensive public consultation with a wide range of representatives of our society, public debates and robust engagements amongst political parties have taken place on this bill since it was first tabled in Parliament in 2008," the statement said.

The statement said over 100 meetings were held over the bill, which makes it probably one of the most consultative bills since the advent of democracy in 1994.

"Hundreds of amendments, over 800 of them, have been made on this bill - which makes it a complete redraft of what was originally tabled in Parliament five years ago.

"We appreciate the effort, dedication and remarkable devotion with which our members in the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces steered this bill to the quality draft it is today.

"We remain unshaken in our conviction that this bill will pass the constitutional muster.

 Sad day for South Africa!

Couple this with Rob Davies' business bill and it is quite clear where this country is headed. The lefists, communists, statists, socialists etc. must be quite thrilled about all this...

We're over the moon! *worships Stalin*

Guess JZ is quite happy about this, pitty we dont have Tuli's report on Nkandla on the table yet.

It's the beginning of the end. Oh wait, it's about the middle of the end.

Is it going to the constitutional court now or did they bypass that?

Somebody has to take it to the constitutional court. The judicial system is not pro-active and it's not its job to be.

The business bill is probably a good idea, but then again I'm pro-government.

Well zuma can go and be my glorious leader over this! State censorship is completely wonderful glory.

Sigh, there really is hope for SA, is there...

Time to start considering staying where i am, because I'm so happy about my glorious leader Dr. Zuma.

Stories and reporting has plumbed new depths, bias and speculation the order of the day. Thank the media for bringing this about.

Technical glitch in Secrecy Bill voting

African National Congress chief whip Mathole Motshekga was wrongfully recorded as voting against the Protection of State Information Bill, the party said on Thursday.

“Due to the technical problem with Parliament’s voting machines, the system erroneously recorded [him]… as having voted in the negative,” the ANC said in a statement.

“Parliament has since swiftly rectified the error and the minutes of today’s [Thursday] sitting will reflect that he has indeed voted in the affirmative.”

Yeah right, more like an glitch in the brain (or lack thereof).

Bet he ticked the wrong box or something.

If there was a known error, why dont they recount? If the error went the other way, how do we know they would've been bothered to rectify it?
