Good day all My Broadbanders,

Recently I have been having this thing to put a new infotainment in my car, VW POLO 2014. But I am not sure what product is the best to go by? I have been talking to a few retailers and they range from R 4 500 to R 12 000( a bit expensive)... but as they say if you want quality then you going to have to pay. In the meantime I would just like to hear about other's opinions and advice about some products which the have been using!

Awaiting to hear from you guys

Regards

Roach

Do you want aftermarket or OEM..? What features do you want..? Bluetooth/aux/reverse camera support..? Android auto/apple car play (I think that's what it's called)..?

I would get the OEM units that have been flashed with the new software to enabled Carplay / Android Auto.

About R4500.

Touch screen to use my phone through android auto or bluetooth. Spoke to someone at Smart Multimedia and they have units for R 11 999 and he says you can go the android auto option but bluetooth will also work as well.

I have heard about Vwtoyota Touchscreens but haven't give it a go yet

What units are those?

I don't think that I would go for units like pioneer, sony, startrek ( I think), kenwood, etc etc. I know they are all good sound quality products but how are their infotainment systems?

Nothing wrong with their systems and usually better than the OEM’s function and price wise but don’t integrate as nicely.

Find the model code for you OEM units available for your vehicle and then check on EBay.

Can’t remember the brand name of the OEM for VW now and I deleted the notes for it when I sold my car.

Make sure you get one with apple car play and android auto, not the mirror link crap.

The thing on Ebay is that you buy and then self fit.... lol I know nothing from car electronics and if I am going to try and wire it on my own, and then most likely I will have to start my car using the volume knob or go through the settings..... haha then I am not going to be impressed with myself after losing a FEW thousand rands

I bought from these guys a few years ago for my Jetta 5. That model was the D90-610 and unit is still going strong although only on Android 4.44. It has wifi and a GPS module built in and you can install any Android GPS application. I am currently running Sygic. I also have my reverse camera attached to it and control functions from my steering. Unit took about just over a week to arrive.
I see the newer models run Android 8.1 and you can attach an I-safe wireless controller or tyre pressure sensors should you want.

Edit: Forgot to add that it also has built-in bluetooth so I can attach my phone to it and make and receive calls. Also has multiple USB ports to attach external HDD or USB stick and SD card slots.

You can source it and just about any installer will do it for you.

Many locals can supply them too, just recommended eBay to find the models you like etc.

Mirror link basically copy's your cellphone screen on the display. Its pretty rubbish and drains the phone battery.
And Android Auto? I have read that you have to download an app to do that?

The one's @SauRoNZA is talking about have all 3 and they work fine. Mirror Link also works, I know with Samsung Car mode it works well, I just use Sygic for navigation if using Mirror Link as it does support Google Maps in Car mode..

These guys currently have a promotion, free reverse cam and free fitment. I have not used them yet, but I am very interested.
