I am extremely confused by the speed test results I'm getting, they are off the charts. I think I must be the only one in South Africa using this configuration, so if MTN wants to use me as a guinea-pig, please contact me. Thanks to Russel from MTN in Port Elizabeth for setting me up!

I have a Sierra Aircard 850 on a G4 Mac Powerbook, using Launch2net software, and I'm out in the bush, using a Yagi antenna to get a signal from MTN, near Grahamstown.

I have tested on 3 sites, and I get conflicting results. Note - some of these are in MBps!

TELKOM (http://www.telkom.co.za/athome/products/dsl/speed1.html)

TEST1:

* Download time: 0.041 seconds
* Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
* Estimated line speed: 99512.2 (kilobits/second)
* Estimated line speed: 12195.1 (kiloBytes/second)

TEST2:

* Download time: 0.217 seconds
* Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
* Estimated line speed: 18801.8 (kilobits/second)
* Estimated line speed: 2304.1 (kiloBytes/second)

TEST 3: Then this completely different one:

* Estimated line speed: 74.2 (kilobits/second)
* Estimated line speed: 9.1 (kiloBytes/second)

SENTECH:
TEST 1:
Your download speed is: 52.25 MBps, or 417.97 Mbps
The test took 0.01 seconds to complete

TEST2:
Your download speed is: 5.93 MBps, or 47.42 Mbps
The test took 0.01 seconds to complete

Your download speed is: 8.43 MBps, or 67.41 Mbps
The test took 0.01 seconds to complete

GAMCO:
126.4kbps or 15.8KBps

Finally, I tested a download from a US site, and I got 0.01MBps - nowhere near the speeds above.

Can someone please explain what's going on here?

Thanks.

Good day,

Could you please PM me with the number you use in the data card so that I can run some test's from my side?

Thanks MTNDD

I'm guessing the speed tests are being loaded from your browser cache because they're definitely not accurate speeds!

The speeds above are currently not available on any mobile network. The files your downloading however may be cached, and may be why your getting the rates you are

Agree

I am thinking the samr thing. Try clrearing your browsers cache and trying the tests again and posting them.

Definitely cache playing a role there. Don't get too excited :p

More realistic figures!

Hi
Thanks for shedding light on these figures. I've retested and realised that I don't have a direct connection to a mystery satelite after all!

I would like your comment on the difference between my original Motorola V620 phone (GPRS) and the data card. I have confirmed with my SP that I can get an EDGE signal with my Yagi booster - I saw for myself speeds of over 200Kbps on his laptop. The reason I bought this datacard was that I believed I would get much higher speeds.

The datacard is averaging 120Kbps while the phone is around 70, but peaked at 105. The phone is NOT EDGE compatible.
Figures from these tests are below.

I wonder if you could also comment on the possibility of getting 3G in the future - apparently it will be rolled out in the Grahamstown area next year. Will it be possible to get the signal with a 3G booster antenna in the same way as I get EDGE with the regular antenna (I get zero signal without the antenna, and about 2 out of 4 bars with it.)

Thanks!

AIRCARD 850 (GPRS > HSDPA):

yeah, theres gotta be sumthin wrong with the speedtest.
when doing speed test on gamco site, here in lanseria close to airport, very few people around, I get anything from 1.5Mbps to beyond 3Mbps, even one test at 15Mbps!.
I press ctrl and refresh to try flush the cache same thing, but on iburst or telkom site, get more acceptible 1200-1500kbps
so could be the website f-up too :-)

Must be F#$R#

Hi MTNdatadude
In one of your previous posts you gave these stats about speed:

EDGE
Max DL = 236 Kbps
Max UL = approx 100 Kbps

3G
Max DL = 384 Kbps
Max UL - 64 Kbps

HSDPA
Max DL = 1.8 Mbps
Max UL = 384 Kbps

You mentioned that it depends on the network and handset capabilities. I'm using an aircard 850, and I'm still getting speeds in excess of these (sometimes)

I tested with 3 browsers on the Telkom site and Firefox comes out tops:

firefox - 2 tests to be sure -

# Estimated line speed: 317.9 (kilobits/second)
# Estimated line speed: 39 (kiloBytes/second)

# Estimated line speed: 342.1 (kilobits/second)
# Estimated line speed: 41.9 (kiloBytes/second)

explorer:
# Estimated line speed: 215.5 (kilobits/second)
# Estimated line speed: 26.4 (kiloBytes/second)

safari
# Estimated line speed: 223.5 (kilobits/second)
# Estimated line speed: 27.4 (kiloBytes/second)

I know I'm not getting 3G because my signal is being boosted with a GRPS/EDGE frequency antenna. Unfortunately the software I'm using on my Mac (Launch2net) does not tell me which kind of signal I'm getting, just signal strength, which is good. It's capable of going up to HSDPA.

Can you comment on this and my previous questions about 3G coming to this area soon?

Thanks!

Might not help you much but I get Vodacom 3G/HSPDA coverage in Grahamstown.
Hmm, I know. MTN is promising April or so next year. But my concern is whether or not one can boost a signal this far with the right frequency antenna. I wonder if anyone is doing this?

Good day,

Well where I am I only have Edge with a test with a Yagi I bounce off another tower somewhere and I got HSDPA
