yah no for gmail in student labs i tunnel in to my home pc and then out to gmail, its faster :eek: with nice steady 128kbps compared to uct's drop as you download. e.g. a 1/2 MB document file attachment would take me 45minutes if i did it straight thru uct. This week, the few times i went in it was FAST :p holiday time is the best. Supprisingly i haven't downloaded a thing a uct.. maybe later this yr.

University Of Stellenbosch

* Download time: 0.985 seconds
* Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
* Estimated line speed: 4142.1 (kilobits/second)
* Estimated line speed: 507.6 (kiloBytes/second)

Think my wireless connection is holding back the speed, damm the wireless!!!

I haven't used the University of Pretoria's internet before but what I could see from the speed that a lecturer was downloading at it is heavily congested :p. It's also much more convenient to chill at my flat :p.

Just for the record those speed tests are false readings.

The speeds in the UCT Lewis Labs (I.S. Honours) == balls. They're slowly implementing bandwith limitations in all labs though, where you'll only be able to get a max of 7kb/s per source. That comes straight from ITS who gunned us one day after they found alot of the pc's in the labs downloading overnight. It seems semi-true because currently, its impossible to access anything at a decent speed.

Hallelujah Honours ends in a month, and with that, my UCT career ^^

Well, back in my day, in 2004, the level 5 blue lan (Honours Section), was quite fast. I used to achieve like 50kBps during the day. considering back then, that was fairly good.

I still remember i made the the hat trick of been in the top 5 downloaders for 3 months in a row.....hey I just wanted my R20 000 i paid back someway or the other ;)

I'm download at 10mb/s at SUN (stellenbosch). So I can get around 1.2MB/s.

But I'm on a 10mbit LAN connection, dunno what I'd get on a 100mbit.

I work in the Drama Dept at the UKZN - Hexagon Theatre. We have a fibre optic cable that terminates right in my office.

It terminates right into a 10mbit hub.

My company has quite a few of SA's universities as clients so I've worked at a few, plus went to UN myself. I must say:

Fastest internet (mainly because it is so well managed, but then again I did have a staff account): University of the Free State;

Slowest internet (also with a staff account): WITS.

Sorry to say buddy, but the fibre optic link is not a fibre optic link to the internet, it's the link that conencts the Hex to main campus because CAT5 cabling has a max length of 100m without repeaters. Your internet speed will still be the same as the rest of campus i.e. nothing to write home about.

If your internet connection is a 56k modem, but your modem is conencted to your PC via a 1GB link, your internet speed will still be 56k. Same principle.

As far as I'm aware (well, it was the case when I went to UNP - Pmb) all internet is provided by Durban campus which is routed to Pmb via a dedicated line.

I'm aware of that. The problem I'm complaining about is the days I have to copy a 1gb file from one of the UKZN servers.

UCT's labs are over crowded esp "The Com Labs" .... in the more private lab's like the comp sci senior labs or the comp sci honours labs you will get great speeds after hours.

UCT>STELLIES !!

Comlabs are the worst. Crappy PCs with CRT monitors and old, broken keyboards. Half of which are only sometimes connected to the network.
And as for the "lab rules" :p What a joke. I got my account disabled for three days for taking a sip of water from a bottle which i swiftly returned to my bag. Are they worried the PCs are gonna get into a worse state than they already are if someone spills something on them?? Please.
