Need to connect a hd pvr 2p to tv with surround sound system. What is the best way to do this? Thanks

My first would be to connect the [hd-pvr]====(hdmi)====[sound]====(hdmi)====[tv] (assuming your sound has hdmi in/outs.)
Your surround sound will 'strip' the audio out from the hdmi signal and forward the picture on to the tv.

If no hdmi on your surround sound, (my tv has audio out) then [hd-pvr]====(hdmi)====[tv]====(optical/coax)====[sound]
^^ I use this setup because i play divx/xvid videos from my tv's usb inputs.

All depends what inputs your sound system has
Surround sound is output via HDMI, optical & coaxial
Stereo sound via RCA (white & red)

What is the difference in using the HDMI cable to co6ect your surround sound or using rca cables? Better quality?

is there a huge sound difference?

That depends.

Are you using the red and white RCA outputs? Are you using the coax output?
If using the red and white one's, you would only get stereo. With coax you would at stereo and on some channels/movies, get 5.1 channels.

If you can use HDMI, use HDMI. It is the easiest.

Waste of time if you ask me. Even on so-called 5.1 broadcasts, I get nothing but stereo, even with trying the various soundtrack options.

I get 5.1 on some movies.
Setup:
SD PVR - Optical - Sony STR-500
SD PVR - RCA - Logik 74cm CRT

I set the STR-500 on Stereo and if I switch to a movie with a 5.1 soundtrack, the Sony changes and says it is receiving 5.1.

I get fairly decent surround sound when there's a DD track available, connected HD PVR 2P with HDMI to amp.

What receiver do you have for your surround sound?

The first option will depend if his receiver supports audio over HDMI (HDMI repeating).

It must be a setting somewhere on my decoder. It's also connected by HDMI to my sony receiver. Can't say I've ever seen it change to multi channel audio.

Does your Sony receiver support HDMI repeating? If not, that would be the reason why you get stereo. You can work around it by connecting an optical/coax cable to the receiver for audio, and HDMI directly to the TV.

Are you sure?
I am under the impression that no sound will be played.

Sigh. No, I meant I can't recall seeing it use multichannel audio for DSTV.

I have PS3 (Bluray) & XBox hooked up to my receiver via HDMI, both with multichannel sound. That's why I'm blaming the decoder. I get sound via the dstv hdmi, just stereo though.

Okay,

make sure you are on MM1 or MM1 HD.
Select the Original soundtrack (Not Family).
See if surround option is shown when you select the soundtrack option.

Thanks. I'll give it a bash, but honestly it's not something that particularly worries me. ;)
