Hey mybb

I just got a call for my insurance company saying If i don't upgrade to a VESA Level 4 immobiliser they will not insure my car.

History:
I have a VW 2004 Golf 1.6 life that i purchase new in 2004. Yes i am still using it as I owe nothing on it and it still going strong. They have been my insurer from when I bought the car.

The car came from the factory with the VW alarm/immobiliser and gear lock.

Now they want me to.
1. Get someone to change the gearlock to a level4.
2. Get someone to change the alarm/immobiliser.

My problem with the options are.
for no. 1 the current gearlock is built into the gear knob boot, if i change it now i will have a hole and someone will have to cut into my plastic gear console to fit the new one..... WTF not a chance.

For no. 2. My key has the alarm/immobiliser and central locking built into this key responder. Now how will they get around my current key that controls the all of this with out f..ing it up the wiring and me now having to have a separate key and alarm.

How will i go about finding out what VESA level my current system is and or am I being to pedantic about this.

I will look at my cars manual that has all the security stuff in it when i bought the car.:mad:

You views and assistance are all welcome.

You owe as much loyalty to your short term insurance provider as you owe to which garage you choose to fill up at.

Get a quote from a competitor showing that they wont require VESA level 14haxBillion, and tell your insurance provider that.

If they insist, switch.

Find a new insurance company..

On a car I had ages ago, they told me I needed a tracker, but they would decrease my premiums... the decrease in the premiums didn't match the amoutn I'd have to pay for a tracker.. told them where to get off, and that if they insisted I would find an insurance company that didn't have such a daft requirement... magically the requirement disappeared.

Which insurer are you at? I know Hollard also requires the immobiliser VESA 4 thing but they give me 2 options:

1.VESA lvl 4 immobilizer

OR

2. Factory Installed immobilizer (SAIA VSS insurance grade A)

Now i don't know how you determine what you have, but make sure you don't already comply with #2 .

Also above is not a requirement to get insurance, if you don't have it, there's an additional excess fee of 10% if your car is stolen. This is Hollard's policy anyway.

Your car is a high risk car in South Africa.I had a tazz and they also needed level 4 immobiliser and gearlock.
With regards to the Alarm they will pull out the whole system from the car and install a brand new Level 4 one, so you will not need your old immobiliser anymore.
Tough call on the gearlock though...

You need to decide whether you want your car to be as secure as possible or whether you wont mind claiming if they do steal your non level 4 car...

Go speak to an insurance broker dude, these people are taking you for a ride. Can probably significantly reduce your premiums for the same cover, you never know.

I am using and insurance broker already. They said they have check with most insurance companies and they are all requiring the same. I am going to find out from VW what my current system is that cam factory fitted.

Slightly OT, be aware that every year the value of a car drops but the insurance companies try and raise your premium. Get it valued and shop around.

All cars need Level 4 immobilisers for insurance.

No they don't. I had the immobiliser and anti-hijack devices removed from my bakkie (took the auto-electrician less than five minutes to remove it AND replace the fuel line) as it was giving me endless grief. My premium on the bakkie was increased by 10%.
