FYI for Fellow Posties & Gamers

Initial Problem was:

When playing CS:S (Counterstrike Source) on a Compaq nx7400 using the Intel® 945GMS Chipset the application hangs the moment its started up.

Resolution:
Use the following command line when starting the application -

"...\cstrike.exe" +mat_forcehardwaresync 0

alongside any other parameters.

Apparently this is caused by some hardware acceleration problem. I've also found that the display driver for the Intel Display card in this Laptop is only supplied by HP/Compaq and is way out of date - older than a year.

Thanks for a great forum.

I really don't know if your graphics is powerful enough to run the game? Have you made sure that it meets every minimum spec?

Some Tweaking

Well...? The game actually runs; requires a wee bit of tweaking but it runs fine. This machine's display card is a Intel Graphics Card with 256mb ram on it.

I actually think that it should perform a bit better but it works fine for now. The initial problem was that the game didn't start at all until I made that tweak and now its playable.

Also interesting is that I had a framerate of 16fps (which sucks) so I found a useful website on increasing the framerate which upped it to 33.66 fps.

That site is located here -

Does it have a dedicated gaming Intel card of 256MB RAM or is it onboard with 256MB allocated to it?

Good question W - not sure; how can I determine? I was curious to know if this machine has an intergrated graphics or an interchangeable one.

I'm not really sure, have you tried searching the internet for reviews or specifications of that spesific laptop? Maybe they'll mention it in one of those. Hope you find what you're looking for!

Because it is a fact! Besides the fact that the 945M is an integrated mobile chipset to start with, the last discrete card intel made was the i740 back in the 90's!

Instead of just being clueless and expecting other people to answer everything for you, go google your own flipping hardware.

Graphics cards
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 with up to 224-MB shared system memory

"Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950 graphics core is an intelligent and responsive graphics engine built into the chipset on the motherboard."

as far as i can understand from his first post, he never asked why he was having problems, he was merely giving advice for people also running CSS on similar onboard graphics cards...

lol, thanks;

the original tweak at the top - she affects the hardware acceleration too much

I've been able to get the Frames Per Second up to 70.13 with this command line, and setting all the settings to the lowest; still sux, but it becomes more and more playable

"C:\Program Files\Counter-Strike Source\hl2.exe" +mat_forcemanagedtextureintohardware 0 -steam -game cstrike -console -dxlevel 7

Using this is better -
+mat_forcemanagedtextureintohardware 0

i've also read somewhere that certain Codecs on your machine could have unpredictable results, however - i havnt tested this as yet.

Just out of interest; the compaq 8220 i think has a built in ATI Radeo chip; those guys get around 90frames per second with recommended settings; at a lower resolutions

My father's laptop (really don't know make or model, maybe an HP?) comes with an ATi X600 mobile chip. It gets FAR better framerates than my old PC (which is to be expected, since it had a GeForce FX5900 Ultra...) Now that I have a 7900GT 512MB all is well :)

Hey,

i'm having a Toshiba laptop with an intel chipset, same as yours.

i have a 1.66 GHZ processor and 1024 MB Ram, But when i try to run CSS (it passes system requirments) it works but i have a framerate of 2-3 ?!

everything is set to low though recomended says most things should be on high. i used the parameters you told me but it didnt make a difference. menu has 250 FPS but from the moment game starts it drops to 1 and then raises to max 3.

My Laptop meets requirments, so i dont know what could be wrong. HL2 works but also choppy in SP.

mmm I see so you force the game into DX7 :D nice! never would have though of that even though it does have DX9/8/7 compatibility.
