I've got a Dell mini 311. (Atom with the Ion Graphics chip, 1366x something resolution)
Got it from Deon wired on special for R2500.
Got a HDMI port, with full HD output.
Just a pity the atom is a bit underpowered to play Full HD content. (4Gb+ files)
Running Ubuntu Linux.
What's the ram like on your machine? to play hd content on an atom you need 4gigs of ram.

Fail...

If you have [-]VDPAU[/-] Purevideo (or whatever your GPU vendor calls it) support (as the ION does), you can use hardware H264 decoding.

And 1080p content has no problem playing with, as mentioned by Synaesthesia, a compatible media player. And that's rendering the full 1920x1080 on an HDTV. CPU usage hovers at around a few percent.

What GPU are you running? You could take advantage of hardware decoders for your HD content, and it'd be smooth sailing (see above post).

As far as I know (stand to be corrected, but this was the case when I checked a few months ago), Media Player Classic is the only player (on Windows) that takes advantage of hardware acceleration for H264. On Linux, I use MPlayer.

Interesting.... no clue anymore - the one PC is an Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHz cpu... and the other (Media Center) is a similiarly specked AMD setup.

Hmmm...

Some of the newer integrated graphics chipsets support hardware H264 decoding, but I doubt that would be in your P4 :(

I'd still expect a P4 @ 3.0 GHz to be able to handle it, even if it has to have high CPU usage

Tried various different players, 4GBs ram in each machine, SATA2 drives...

My Acer Atom lasted just over 9 months then went bang.

I will never buy another net book ever again. They are way over priced and to be honest buy a laptop that has a CD/DVD ROM makes better sense.

I can count the times I've ever needed to use the optical drive while mobile with my shoes on and one hand in my pocket...

And if your netbook went bang after 9 months, then it's still covered under warranty; in which case, you could get it repaired for free.

Unless you did something to void the warranty?

My wife has a Lenovo S10e with Windows XP and she loves it to bits. We initially got it for her so she could do some work when we travel a lot, and gets 3-4 hours batter life out of it. We also use it on photoshoots to download photos from our Cameras so it was well worth the R3k we spend on it. Much cheaper than the portable photo hard drives!

I find nettops to be over priced in this country

Bingo.

I' waiting a while until some of the new netbook tech like dual core Atoms or the Nvidia Ion chipsets become available.

R3500.00 for a plain old Atom is just obscene.

1.Intel Ultra Low Voltage ULV723 (1.2Ghz, 800Mhz, MB L2) 2GB DDR 3, 250GB Hard Drive, Intel GMA X4500M, 13.3" HD WXGA LED (1366 X 768) with 1.3 Camera, 10/100 Ethernet, Broadcom b/g, BT, 4 Cell, 4 in 1 card reader, HDMI, Dolby Sound Room, Vista home basic. R3450

Where are you getting this and what model is it? It sounds like a good deal.

Through a bud who deals with Pinnacle in Durbs.

I've decided to trash the idea of a netbook and go for a core i5 - I've seen one at Incompetent Connection for R8999. After a week of pricing and research, 4k for a decent Atom is not really worth it. Rather take the plunge.
