Intel kills off 8th-gen desktop CPUs

Yep, having a good CPU and enough RAM means the OS never really becomes slow enough to be a bother. I wont grow grey hair just because the OS does not boot in 20 seconds.

Most games I also run on HDD, it's just the largest or resource intensive games that actually benefit from being on a SSD, Think of it as a performance drive. I first noticed the difference in Fallout 4 when I hit the infinite loading screens bug, got a SSD with just that on it and the problem was mostly resolved.

Each to their own. I've found games benefit slightly, but the OS gets a major boost. Boot times aside, the whole menu system is snappy and instant, programs that are often used are delightfully fast.
 
I was running a core 2 duo with a SSD, 6GB RAM.
The SSD was a major improvement but the SSD also caused the CPU to worked a lot harder.

Upgraded December to a 3700x 8 core AMD, NVME SSD.
There is a major difference in performance. Everything is faster and snappier.

Get a SSD. A sata SSD will have a major impact. You are not seeing a difference because the HDD is a MASSIVE bottleneck.
If you get 10 FPS more in game benchmark using an SSD versus a HDD I will print this page and live stream eating it.

SSD does not improve frame rates not now not ever, nor will it increase CPU usage, it will however speed up loading of applications, copying and writing of data.

Increase in FPS is directly tied to ram, CPU and GPU, not an SSD.

The exception there is a game that loads assets on the fly, here a SSD can decrease stutter.

You are going to need more compelling stuff than boots faster..... I can wait a few minutes in the morning it wont kill me.

Tell me about it, having to support an entry level laptop with a 5400rpm drive.
With celeron laptops especially it's usually the RAM or CPU that's the bottleneck not the HDD, put a 5400rpm drive in a good rig and it will be a completely different experience at least partly because less swap will be used.

That's on Windows 7.
I saw a massive(tm) performance increase in general responsiveness on Windows 8 going from HDD to SSD. On windows 7 the difference wasn't that much, but still there.

I booted up my 2600K again just to see how it compares to my new machine. I didn't run comprehensive tests and it isn't apples to apples as the old 2600K was recently clean installed and the 3700X has some RGB drivers, DB services, Skype and whatnot running on it.

3700X boots noticably faster. 20s boot times? What is this? 2005? More like 5s to the login screen (didn't time it, will later).
Once I enter my pin, the 2600K spinner goes around once or twice before it is "in". On the 3700X there is no spinner, it just fades to desktop. Both machines stood on the login screen for a while.

Launching Word the second time (didn't check the first time) on both machines take more or less the same time, at about 1s.

The 2600K has a SATA SSD and the 3700X has an NVMe SSD.

Edit: when I had a smaller SSD, I would run my OS on it and almost all games on the HDD. Especially if you don't have lots of RAM and still need to use a swap file, even games will benefit more if you run the OS on the SSD.

Well that's something for me to test later when I have the budget for a larger SSD, atm though I really don't need it.... I really really really want it..... but my pocket scolds me for just thinking about it.

Also there is the one drawback of system restore being disabled on SSD drives, yes it does not always work properly anyway but it's good to have in a pinch.

I have a great deal of experience in using what I got rather than spending money on unnecessary trinkets..... My secondary monitor is a old CRT.... waste not want not

just because you can play around with old tech doesnt mean its faster, everyone here can do that. nothing about hdd performance is better than ssd. especially comparing them after 6-12 month of end user use.

Seriously bra, watching the whole vid would take less time than your boot.

It loads open office after the boot, which will give you an indication of app responsiveness on a SSD vs a HDD.
That goes for everything you load, browser, apps, settings etc

Um yeah no, Fallout 4 guys had SSD's and still had mirco stutters....and was related to the actual games files and drivers, and hardware in particular nivida pascal cards......nothing to do with with an SSD or HDD or abucus
GAMES DO NOT LOAD GAME ASSETS ON THE FLY.


In actual fact I have Fallout 4 on a 5200RPM WD green HDD, and there is zero lag, magical voodoo.

You do know I am a game developer ?

So turn it on, it's also disabled on smaller HDDs

It is a Bethesda game, THEY ARE ALWAYS FULL OF STUTTERS!
and in all honesty, fallout is a teef of a game on any hardware - but that doesnt mean its not a fun title.
