Intel super-fast Optane storage launched for desktop PCs

We need the pricing on this so that Thor can calculate how many month he'd need to live off 2 minute noodles in order to get this.

Was just about to say exactly that. I read desktops so it should be cheap? IE not enterprise pricing?

Intel will initially have two capacities for Optane Memory, 16GB and 32GB, priced at $45 and $77 respectively.

Pricing isn't actually all that bad for what you are getting, but :

Performance should be similar, except the larger drive will obviously be able to cache more data. And that brings me to the elephant chilling out over in the corner: there are a couple of specific requirements that limit Optane Memory to a very narrow use case for now.

First, Optane Memory requires a 200-series chipset motherboard with support for the feature. Second, you need to have a Kaby Lake processor. That means the only people that can even use Optane Memory will be running Intel’s latest and greatest processors and motherboards, which means they’re mostly early adopters. And these early adopters will primarily benefit from Optane if they’re running hard drives and not SSDs

Don't be pesimistic. I remember, someone has claimed on the frist announcement that Optane storage would not come to the market soon. I wrote that support for Optane memory was already implemented in chipsets, it is why it was expected soon.

Meh, don't need one.

add to that the Kaby Lake restriction and the whole proposition seems even less desirable

Micron (jointly-developed 3D Xpoint with Intel) will be licensing their own version to SSD OEM's...would be interesting to see if these restrictions still apply.
