Intel touts dual-core Atom processor

I hope it's a new design CPU, cos the current dual core Atoms are rubbish.

Dual core atoms are not new. Have had the N330 in my media center for ages already.

No they are not but the mobile ones with the N designation are ;)

Damn... I thought my N270 was dual core until I looked at this... Then I found that it shows as two cores only because of hyper-threading... What a shame. :(

Will look into the performance of these new dual cores and might just upgrade though :)

My netbook's got an Atom CPU. Works well with windowsXP.

I use it for internet, chat, and the occasional email. Games is rubbish on the netbook's small screen though.

Don't need anything stronger than that.

What a giant fail of a news article...

Intel N330, a dual-core Atom processor, has been around for a LONG time already.

The article talks about it offering better graphical performance? What a joke. So it has the new Intel integrated graphics (because it's based on Nehalem)... Previous Atom processors had that too... and at a higher clock frequency.

I don't see the N550 starting anywhere NEAR as big a revolution as the article makes out.

And Intel not allowing the Atom on machines with a screen size larger than 10.2"? Well I have a Compaq Mini 311 with a screen size of 11.6" that begs to differ.

I suppose that by now, I should start to expect this kind of drivel from Mr. Otter.

Thought Atoms were mobile chips and that the N330 is dual core.

No, Atom comes in three flavours Nettop(Small Desktop), Netbook & MID(UMPC)

The Atom 330 does not carry the 'N' prefix. The 'N' prefix is reserved for the Netbook range while the 'Z' prefix is reserved for the MID(UMPC) range. The normal Nettop has no prefix or it uses the 'D' prefix. They are designed for different application and trade-offs are made in the power vs performance areas.

What annoys me is that even though netbooks with Ion chipsets have been around for over half a year none of the local dealers or distributers have them available in SA.

I think that as long as they are sitting on tons of hugely overpriced netbook stocks they aren't going to bring any of this new stuff in because they don't want to render them obsolete. The reality is that netbooks should cost half of what they do in South Africa but the dealers and distributers think that they can put huge margins on them.

Don't expect to see any of these new CPU's on the market here any time soon.
