anyone got indications in SA what the intel pricecuts are like? Noticed online prices for some vendors haven't even changed it or using the opportunity make a quick buck..

well... who cares, the Amd 6000+ is only R2399 on some updated websites, which means it's on par with a core2duo E6600 and the mother boards are A LOT cheaper and you get sli mobo's for a lot less money.

yeah and another price drop in happening in the 3rd quarter and the quad core will be priced at what the E6600 is prices atm.

Keen to get one but these price drops are just too significant.

ya... so the cpu is R2k, but with an sli mobo (R1.5k-R2k for a good one) vs an amd R2k + sli mobo(R1k-R1,5k) it makes the amd system a bit cheaper

But is the cheaper option really better?

Latest pricelists I got says:

Cheapest SLI AMD mobo: ASUSM-M2N4-SLI=R676 (excl VAT)
AMD 6000+ CPU: R2000 (excl VAT)

Cheapest SLI Intel mobo: ASUS P5N-E SL=R1234 (excl VAT) *cheapest one I could find*
Intel E6600 CPU: R1759 (excl VAT)

AMD=R2676 (excl VAT)
Intel=R2993 (excl VAT)

How does the E6600 compare to the 6000+?

what? no, at stock the amd beats the intel in every thing BUT the office mumbo jumbo, the 5600+ is comparable to the e6600, but yes, it's true the intel with the slightest overclock becomes the ruler of the prison b!tches

IBM couldn't afford to buy AMD even if they sold all their assets.
How do you get to this? AMD has total assets of $13 billion, IBM has a annual turnover of $91.5 billion and their assets are over $100 billion. AMD only has a market cap of $7.8 billion. IBM's annual net profit is higher then that.

Would it be good for us if IBM bought AMD and ATI? :confused:
I am not sure but remember a time when IBM sold SCSI hard drives for the AS400 for 15 times the same drive for PC's. The only difference being a header on the AS400 drive. No hardware differences at all. I don't think they would want AMD to go under as they get some patent revenues from AMD.

Not sure about those numbers Abe but will find out.
However I will say that there is no reason to believe IBM has an interest in the X86 market as a semiconductor manufacturer. Besides the fact that the purchase would never be approved :/

Edit: Either way it seems I was in haste to defend AMD and you are right IBM has much better financial records than AMD.

IBM do some wierd and wonderful things sometimes ;) - CC would probably have a lot to say about it though if they tried.
