Thanks for sharing - hope it means more HD channels.
Well, they are much better at launching rockets than the Russians. They have a 8% failure rate and the cost of insuring a satellite to be launched in Bikonaur is 10 to 15 times higher than if launched from this French site. As a result of this, their cost per kg is the lowest in the world, the actual cost in US$ is lower than it was in the 1908s.

Intelsat 20 was installed as the upper payload on this latest Ariane 5 launch, and was released first during the mission at 28 minutes into the flight. Built for international satellite operator Intelsat by Space Systems/Loral of Palo Alto, California based on its 1300-series platform, Intelsat 20 weighed approximately 6,090 kg. at liftoff, and is configured with Ku-band, C-band and Ka-band transponders.
Intended to replace the Intelsat 7 and Intelsat 10 satellites in orbit,
Intelsat 20 is to provide video, telephone and data transmission services for Europe, Africa, Russia, Asia and the Middle East.

It means more HD and SD channels. Lots of additional MC transponder frequencies will be available by the end of year. We are getting ready for upgrades to our IF conversion, single cable systems... Additional bandwidth from DVB-S2 migration will also eventually happen. Exciting times.

Vodacom Business
Satellite for rural areas seems to be all the craze lately with quite a number of different offerings on the table
Telkom has never seen these low population areas as a priority.
Vodacom, Agri SA connect farmers
Agri SA, which represents over 70 000 small and large-scale commercial farmers, says it has gone through a lengthy process to accurately evaluate possible alternatives to fixed-line telecommunication in relation to the congress's resolution.
Chris Lazarus, managing executive of Vodacom Business Services, says the partnership with Agri SA gives the operator an opportunity to bring Vodacom's satellite-based voice and data solutions to the rural community.
So one wonders -- seeing as IT journalists NEVER provide any real technical detail
Which Satellite will Vodacom be using ?
Which band ?
Which equipment ?
Which pricing structure ?
Perhaps if Chris Lazarus or Johannes Möller, or the lazy journalist read this they could tell us where and when these farmer meetings and pilot projects are to take place ( it is not just "farmers" who struggle with stolen cables and "Internetlessness" )

Not necessarily.Toptv's uplink is ka band.Although ka band is supposed to suffer more with rain fade,toptv proved them wrong.Some of the ka band transponders will be used for direct content uplink from Europe.Samsung will also have a fta offering on IS-20.

No. It goes in the same orbital slot. Once it is in place, IS7 will be moved away from that slot and will be used for other things, at lower capacity, for a few more years.

I didn't know they launched satellites in 1908?
Just kidding.That is impressive... but I am surprised in that case that many satellite companies don't insure - as far as I know it is ESA policy not to insure. I know many of the US companies do insure, so for them, the cost might be lower.
I really wouldn't discredit the Russians though - they were the real pioneers, and still do excellent work. The Soyuz range of rocket are the most successful rocket of all - over 1700 launches, and that dates back to the early days when they were doing over 50 launches a year. The latest Soyuz (with Fregat final stage) has a 36/36 success, very similar to the Ariane 5 50/50. Even the French use Soyuz launch vehicles from Kourou.
