Interest rate slaughter

Whatever you buy, nothing will be as cool as the Delta Motor Corporation of South Africa's 1991 Opel Monza 160i GSi Car of The Year :p

Joh, for real, only thing that beats that in terms of quality is a Scirocco R.
We're talking real VW quality - the kind that comes standard.

I like VW's, I have a polo at the moment that I quite enjoy.
Having said that I wont be buying another one in future. The pricing on VW spares is a joke, if I go for VAG(just for you Roux) then it will be an audi, they cost the same to maintain as a polo does.

Have you approached your bank for finance you may get a better deal.

Sure, you can pay it off quicker if you get a raise, but the cat will be old by that time so you might as well opt for something better and nicer. No one want to drive an old car.

Pfft. My cars' ages add up to 26 years. They are highly experienced and any bugs have long been worked out

Polo will be around R1200 from next year according to the quotes I got (pretending to be a year older, older licence etc etc), which I'm willing to pay.

This I doubt!! I have had insurance for 3 years on my car, I asked them to revise after my 25th birthday(may 2014), they sent a renewal letter with EVERYTHING going up. I said I wanted to pay less not more. So the "Manager" looked and said they will keep the premiums as they were before the yearly increase... Bastards. Don't bank on that money

Who are you insured with if I may ask? Through a broker?

No broker, just santam. I also have 2 laptops, 2 phones, 2 ipads and household on the policy. Nothing brings my insurance down... Every milestone you make they just claim risk profile.

I first got quotes from Outsurance, Santam, Auto & General and Budget when I was shopping around. They all quoted me astronomical figures (R1600 - R2100) per month, and in the end I went through a broker and slashed that price down to R980, which includes household, an excess waiver and a few other odds and ends.

I'm not saying you WILL save money but you can always give it a shot. Brokers can negotiate up to an extent on your behalf and they keep you happy, as their commission depends on you sticking with them.

YMMV ;)

EDIT: I have been in one accident (not my fault, some old bat t-boned me), I am 22 so I fall under 25, had my license for 4 years and this is on a R150'000 book value car. Did you specify the electronic goods? This usually pushes up the premiums a bit :(

Im paying R815 just for my car, book value R42500. I'm 25 had my license for 3 years and insurance for 4 year(used to ride a bike). I dont have an excess though.

I rate you should go speak to a broker...it can't hurt to see what they can offer you ;)

And with the money you save you can spot me a beer one day ;)

Update: Got the car with 21kms last week monday (23rd June), just got to 1000 kms yesterday.

The engine sounds a bit like a diesel at times, more than 3 people started it then asked if its a diesel. Fuel economy is very very good on the highway. I understand why most people see it as a no-brainer compared to its rivals. If you're not a gadget person, the standard Polo Comfortline is brilliant. If you like fancy features like me, be prepared to pay at least 20k for options. The 16" Rivazza wheels do compromise ride comfort a bit compared to the standard 15s.

Coming from a 55kw/105NM 1.2, the 77kw/155NM 1.6 is awesome. The gear ratios also make it less noisy and a bit more fuel efficient than the Clio on the highway. 2nd and 3rd in the Clio are covered by 2nd in the Polo, 4th in Clio = 3rd in Polo, 5th in Clio revs the same as 4th in the Polo.

Say what you like about VW and people who buy them; those Germans know how to put a car together.

You must have a very high risk car.

Still don't get how people are happy with a 1600 that gives 77kw, when my 1500 Honda gives me 88kw.
