Hey guys

So I'm in a bit of a pickle. I'm moving into a garden flat this week, but the flat has no telephone line or internet. The pensioner couple who the house belongs to (the flat is sort of an extension of the house) have a telephone line but have never had DSL on the line. I've looked at getting WISP internet, but trees in the area make that solution a no-go.

So here's my pitch. I'd like to go to Telkom, get the forms for DSL application, have the landlord fill it in with supporting documentation, submit it, and then when the techs come to install the line, request that they install an extender so the DSL point sits in the flat instead of in the house (where they're never going to use it).

Do any of you guys have any suggestions or experience with something similar? Any help would be much appreciated.

I assume so; it's in Centurion, Jean Avenue. EDIT: Well it's got LTE coverage according to Telkom Mobile, but the SmartBroadband LTE towers aren't in range, it seems.
Is the area covered for LTE?

They will not do that. Either extend the line to the flat yourself or if that is not possible, ask Telkom to come and do it. When done apply for ADSL.

There are a few options open to you:

(1) Owner is prepared to add ADSL to his existing line. Let Telkom come and do their thing and install the ADSL modem/router. If a wireless router, set it up for use in the flat. Or, go and get a wireless extender and install it yourself.
(2)Owner not prepared to add ADSL to their line. Go to the ISP of your choice and get it installed to the flat direct. This option is simple and clean. not requiring any linkage with the owner etc.

Try LTE it will be less admin and its guaranteed good speed for you.

So do you mean I can approach, for instance, Afrihost, and have them activate the line for DSL for me and all that?

No not on the existing line, get a new line installed via the ISP of your choice direct to the flat. This line will then be completely separate from the owners telephone service.

Shame DarthRiven ... these days you should factor the internet into your choice of apartment, rather than only solve the problem after you can't escape it.

In my experience it's easy to just log a request for a fresh installation: the techy will run the necessary lines to hook you up. Just get your landlord to approve the concept, because there will be obviously a basic line installation into the flat (maybe even a small drilled hole required to get a line into the flat).

Thanks for all the info, guys. I'll talk to Telkom and the landlord later today and hear what's possible.
