We have developed and implemented a sales force automation application running on iMate PDA's (Q2020). This application have been running for more than 5 months with very little problems. The majority of our problems are communication / synching problems.

On one occasion MTN was NOT allowing our cell phone numbers through the firewall and the entire day the reps could NOT place any orders on their PDA's.

Last week Monday was again one of those days and it seems that today has started the same.

Can someone please advise me why we are experiencing intermittent communication problems using GPRS?

Our client has been advised to use a corporate APN, which according to MTN will help with the escalation process.

Please help...

you say you have probs with holding a GPRS connection or is the problem experienced when you sync ????
be more specific

The GPRS connection is established, but we sometimes cannot connect to our server - so yes it is when we sync.

Hi,

We do not modify any packets that are being sent, nor strip off any information in any of the packets that are sent. We will need more details on what is happening between the units and the server, basically we will need to know how your systems work. how you get the cell phone number across, how you do your authentication, etc. area's, etc. as soon as I get this info I'll have to send this to my network department and they will log a ref.

Hi,

We are using:
1) SQL CE on the PDA to store the data
2) RDA (Remote Data Acces) to communicate with the server
2) Windows 2003 Server
3) IIS (Internet Information Server) to communicate with PDA
4) SQL Server 2000 Database
5) Windows Authentication

We pull the changed data on a daily basis using RDA and push the changes back to the server accordingly. This technology works very well.

We believe it is the server connectivity that is giving us a problem. I think it is between MTN backend and the ISP backend.

Thanks. Hope this helps.

Somewhere In our great nation we have the self employed cable guys
that really help the system of communication.
I think you must ask them.
The Zambian copper belt is at a standstill because of them.
Just a joke:)

There are a lot of 3rd parties who run their own systems, designs and products over the public GPRS interface.

This is not the most reliable as there are hundreds of potential problems that can affect performance. A lot of it is outside our control as it relates to general internet issues like SPAM watch sites that block IPs.

You guys also share IP blocks and it is nearly impossible to trace problems as it is mixed up with all the other utility traffic.

Thanks,

Our client will move onto a corporate APN from next month onwards. Will this help identifying the problem on your side?

We are experiencing similar problems at the moment. Please HELP..We cannot continue like this. Everything was working fine this morning. In Cape Town everything looks fine, but in JHB, Pretoria and Durban they are having problems connecting to the server. Any maintenance or IP blocking taking place. Please I am begging to find a solution.
