International dead?

Notifications from IS Ops team.

We are currently experiencing a critical degradation in international fibre
access services between our London, New York and Rosebank points of
presence. This is due to a Telkom fibre ring failure at the NDF Exchange. No
estimated time of repair is available.

as this is my first post ON ADSL - all installed - this is hardly the wild thing I'd been expecting, pings to yahoo in the 1100ms range, with 20% packet loss, irc stuttering between 0.7 and 2k, dc++ not really working..

as a brand new.. - wooo - mid-b*tch I see a PHAT difference suddenly..
okay, irc d/l 9 - 10k, which for me is fine.. pings to yahoo down to 300ish, no packet loss

still dont seem to be able to get DC++ downloading anything - not even peoples file lists - if anyone has info or config info needed for happiness on Axxess+DC++, please advise.
Also there's no extra 'proxy settings' needed for any appz is there? (IRC, DC++)

(sorry to hijack the thread, I wont do it again :P

It's a pretty rare occurance - at least, since Nov last year when I got ADSL at home, it's happened maybe 5 times all told.

BTW, are you going through your router ?
You may need to open up some ports - as I've never used DC++ (not enough HD space right now ;) ), I'm not sure what ports you'll need to open. There should be some info around.

For bittorrent, you'll be wanting to open up ports 6881 - 6999

Change yourself to passive mode. If it works then, then get no-ip or something and enter your no-ip address in the domain box when selecting active. Of course you'll need to open/forward the ports you use on your router.

[edit]Passive mode is generally a bad mode to be in (as you can only connect to active users), but is a quick fix if you're too lazy to do the no-ip method[/edit]

Cheers

Yeah thanks Glipsie re the passive mode - I was fiddling around grumpily, and thought hmm lemme try that - boom - suddenly things are working.. IRC seems the best speeds for things thus far though.. still, I'm happy, any speeds are good compared to sente- I mean 'IBurst' :)
