Hi.

How long would you be staying & how much data do you think you'll need?

MTN have a good prepaid data special on at the moment (or has it finished?). 2GB for R189.
Not sure about getting a microsim on prepaid, how much of a mission it is and the costs.
Sent from my 7 Mozart T8698 using Board Express

Be sure to take your passport with you to the shop and if possible a letter from the hotel where you will be staying. This is for RICA purposes. Be sure to tell them you want a prepaid micro sim. Many stores might not have prepaid micro sims in stock...so they might have to give you a normal prepaid sim first and once it is activated and number assigned, do a sim swop to the micro sim.

Regards to data...you most stores now have the system on their tills where you give them the cell number and they load the data bundle directly onto your number for you...no more need to first load airtime and then convert it into data. Keep in mind you will need normal airtime in your in-account to make calls and normal SMS's etc.

Also will have to make sure that the service provider covers the area you planning to use the data.

Not all of them cover all the area's, so price is not the only factor. If you are planning to move around a lot its better to go with the bigger names like Vodacom and MTN even if they charge more.

Why the heck do we so sim swops here and cant the providers just cut the sims in store?

I went to indonesia recently. Blackberry is all popular there and the iphone isnt. So having a iphone 4s i needed a microsim. At first asking, no one had it but then everyone offers to cut the big sim to smaller for free. So i went with the provider XL. Paid 145 000 rupiah or about r130 for unlimited local provider calls, 20 000smses for the month, and unlimited internet at their fastest speed 3.6mbps which was ok. A zillion hotspots in every mall there. Worked well. They have microsim cutters which you can purchase even at amazon for next to nothing. So no need for a sim swop. Worked well. Here to have to do a simswop is a total ripoff. Its time the cellphone stores get microsim cutters.

Because the mobile networks do not endorse the cutting of sim cards. Should you want to do this yourself then you may do so...but we will not do it for you as there is a risk of damaging the sim and or the phone by using that cut sim in your phone.

Thanks for your very prompt responses.

A few points:

1) coverage is much more important than price.

2) Most of my time will be durban & kruger.

If i go to a vodacom store is there a better chance of getting a Iphone micro sim?

Who has best coverage vodacom or MTN?

Thanks Again

Vodashop clipped my sim for my RAZR Droid with no issues when I upgraded.

Give me the Vodashop name (what area) and who served you RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!

Kidding. :p

Seriously though....it has been communicated to all Vodacom dealers that we are NOT to cut sim cards. If the client whishes to do this himself with his own method (template or clipper), then so be it....but we are NOT to do this.

And that is the official stance. If you damage your card and or phone by using that card....no one else is responsible but the client.
