Apologies if this is in the incorrect section.

Today I tried to activate a new Kaspersky Antivirus on a laptop. When trying to activate it gave me a code error which says it cannot connect to the server. I then used Opera to check Kaspersky.com and browsed through the site(which is working fine). I then came upon https://activation.kaspersky.com where I should be able to use the code for offline activation using the .key file. Now the problem is https://activation.kaspersky.com doesn't work and I guess also why Kaspersky cannot activate the program.

Then I used my phone which is on MTN and checked the site. Voila...Working.
I also checked the site with a vodacom sim card and it also is not working.

When I use http://unblockbypass.com with the normal ADSL line the https://activation.kaspersky.com site is working 100%.

During the day I am on a Afrihost 15GB package, so no shaping whatsoever. There is no proxies /disabled website/keywords, set up on the router or anything like that.

I phoned afrihost during the day and they said there is a problem with my port. So I phoned Telkom and they recreated my port.... STILL NO LUCK

Now its 6pm and Im at home using a openweb account, but the problem still persists.

Any advice?

Thanks

1. Probably an installation problem with the setup
2. Hidden settings you had to put in like your gateway address to the router
3. Its either that your homegroup isn't setup so it won't ask you if the line you connect to is home or work
4. You skipped number 3 by canceling it which will block all internet access through the software (Had that happen to my antivirus so had to reinstall it since I didnt realise what it was for)

This is all presuming if antivirus works like the ones I know, Office Scan/Comodo/Avira.

I presume you tried another ISP?

No the problem is that I cant access https://activation.kaspersky.com

If this site works the antivirus will activate through the adsl.
Ive reset the adsl router as well so there is no settings to prevent it from working. This is the 1st time the site is not working. Ive tried numerous pc's.

Ive tried above using 4pc's, 2adsl lines, 2 different routers and 2 ISPs (home and work).

EDIT: The rest of the internet works 100% international and local.

Pings fine here to their activation site, it shouldn't timeout.

I get a different IP address for the same activation website

So any ideas what can be done to resolve this?

The only common device between home and work is the DSL router. The one is a MEGA 100WR and the other is a 105WR.
Furthermore nothing is the same. I have reset the modem to default settings as well earlier.

Either ISP settings or its the DNS settings in the router

I got these in mine which I put in manually long ago when I had problems, since the automatic ones wern't working.
Primary DNS Server: 196.43.50.190
Secondary DNS Server: 196.43.53.190

I also could not open the page now (opened just to check if it works here)

What I did though is to put the IP ichigo posted, into my hosts file and now the site loads up fine by me.

Post the following into hosts file and try again:

62.213.110.144 activation.kaspersky.com

@ichigo: what ISP are you using?

@Flidiot:" Post the following into hosts file and try again:
62.213.110.144 activation.kaspersky.com "

How do I do this?

Open up the following path:

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

If you are using Windows 7, just post it in your search bar (at bottom of start menu) and hit enter.

In the folder that opens up you will have a few files, double click the "hosts" file - open it up with Notepad.

You can then paste this right at the bottom of the file:
62.213.110.144 activation.kaspersky.com

You can then just save and exit.

More details on editing the file found here:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/27350/beginner-geek-how-to-edit-your-hosts-file/

When you are done, the file should look something like this:

# Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost

I am using 20 gig Do3 Telkom Saix Account as my ISP

You log into your router and go to where you put in your adsl details and it should give you an option to automatically get the dns' or to put in your own.

Or if you don't want to then right click your network connection > Network and Sharing Centre > View Status > Properties > Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) > Properties > Advanced > DNS Tab > Click Add > Type first DNS address in post 9 > Then click add > Do the same for the second > Then ok all the way then close it

Ok. my guess is that afrihost is also on IS as I know openweb is and that is why it is not working. Im guessing there was a problem with their network. I did what Flidiot suggested using the host file and it worked. Now after a while I changed the HOST file back to normal and still the site is working. I will check the other pc's at work again tomorrow. But for now at home its working. So thanks for all the replies and effort guys. I really appreciate it! Will post again tomorrow if It is not working for some reason. But will first change the primary/secondary DNS settings in the router...

skusku:
Your web browser is also caching the DNS entry. So if it worked once by altering the hosts file, then your browser will cache that working entry.

Afrihost resells IS (Internet Solutions) accounts just like OpenWeb.

It could be that the IS DNS servers returned an IP address of a non-functioning Kaspersky mirror. Instead of modifying the hosts file, you could always use the Google DNS server: 8.8.8.8
Please just note that you'll end up using non-local mirror sites when using Google DNS - except for SourceForge mirrors which gives you content based on your IP address.

Sorry I'm only picking up on this thread so late, looks like you've found a solution that works. Pls let me know if this issue persists.

Just to clarify, IS is our upstream provider, but we have our own account structure, we don't resell IS accounts. So our pricing, data offering, is completely independent.
