Hi guys.
I want to open a new internet cafe in my home town. With so many ISP's offering so many different types of uncapped accounts, I need a good advice on which bandwidth speed of which ISP will be good for a startup Internet Cafe.

Thanking you in advance.

You'd have to decide what your focus would be. Gaming/surfing/downloading?
If a combination you'd need a way to share the bandwidth fairly. An uncapped unshaped account would be ideal but can be costly

Are you sure you want to open an Internet cafe? They have become completely irrelevant. It would be crazy to invest money in a dying business model.

What he says.

I have yet so see an internet cafe stay in business very long.

If you have an existing business you want to slipstream an internet cafe into, maybe for extra income but don't depend on it for your primary income.

With the current cost of data, I believe I can still make money with an Internet cafe In my home town Mahikeng. Obviously ancillary business will also be done.

Bring your own device I-Cafe is what I have in mind so Downloading and maybe gaming is what the bandwidth should be able to handle

I see a lot of internet cafes closing down rather than opening up

When last did you even visit an internet cafe?

They're still pretty relevant and there's quite a bit of users still without internet or means to connect that needs to. Trust me on that.

The reason the guys goes out of business isn't the type of business they're in, just that they don't know how to run a business and it's usually a "im gonna make so much money" type thing instead of approaching it correctly.

After a few years their PC's never get replaced, their service sucks and their price is way too high (especially rent at a decent location)

Planning it from the beginning, allocating a budget to replace equipment, focussing on events and promotions etc You'll do very well for yourself

I appreciate your opinions everyone especialy your optimism ENVO

I can't visit any because there aren't any. They've all gone out of business.

I've seen my local mall going from having four internet cafes in 2006 to none now. Towards the end it was being used by people who don't have PCs, not just an internet connection. They were being used for typing out CVs more than browsing the net. With mobile data, more people have an internet connection than a PC.

Well, there's one just off St. Georges Mall in Cape Town that charges R5 p/h. Has about 20-30 pcs. I'm guessing they cater for general PC usage rather than just being for internet, but I'm sure there are some places that can support an internet cafe for this exact same reason.

They are still very viable and relevant businesses in this country...

... if money laundering is your thing. :p

Invest your money in Unit Trusts. At least you will have something to show for it after 2 years, which you won't have with an Internet Cafe.

Now a coffee shop with free WiFi on the other hand...

Internet cafe's are so 90's.

People who cant get ADSL or who don't have a PC, can get internet on their phones. Email, Gmail, Google, Facebook...

ITNT is now selling the cheapest ADSL for R1 a GB, doesnt hurt to try.

I think the idea is not to go for the cheapest bandwidth, which would have an immediate impact on the business' ability to provide the service it is designed around.

One would most likely have to invest in the fastest line speed and unshaped bandwidth, with a focus on real time services like gaming. Internet cafes can be low profit, after initial setup and rent. You need to have a certain focus in mind: Is it going to be a gaming place? Or just internet terminals? Will you have software to rate limit the users so you don't have 1 bandwidth hog ruining it all?
